Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) Awarded $10,000 by Sherwood Cares 2024

VENTURA COUNTY — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) is excited and honored to have received a grant of $10,000 from Sherwood Cares for the financial support needed to help serve youth in Ventura County through mentorship. The Sherwood Country Club Charitable Foundation is dedicated to serving children and families in our community by supporting programs that address educational, medical, nutritional, and safety needs. BBSVC serves youth through traditional 1-to-1 youth mentoring and provides opportunities where youth can serve as a mentor to their peers or take on leadership roles to help bring awareness to community issues.

Classified Employee Honorees Recognized at VCCCD Board Meeting

CAMARILLO — The Community Colleges of Ventura County are delighted to honor and celebrate the exceptional work of Fidelia Flores, Financial Aid Specialist at Oxnard College, as the 2024 Classified Employee of the Year. The annual award is a tribute to classified professionals who demonstrate professional ethics and standards and serve the community with purpose and passion.

“Fidelia Flores exemplifies the spirit of community and commitment that we cherish at the Community Colleges of Ventura County,” said Board Chair Bernardo M. Perez. “As we honor her as our Classified Employee of the Year, we are also proud to support her for the statewide award, reflecting her profound impact on our community and beyond.”

SANTA MARIA — Students in Allan Hancock College’s SkillsUSA program took home multiple gold, silver and bronze medals from the SkillsUSA state competition in Ontario, California.   

A record 28 of the 33 Hancock students who participated in this year’s competition earned medals. That includes 17 students who took home gold medals in a diverse range of competitions, including architectural drafting, computer programming, web design, crime scene investigation, welding and more.  

“Our SkillsUSA team showcases how Hancock students can take the skills they learn at the college and apply them outside the classroom,” said Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D. “Hancock is proud of these students who worked hard with their faculty advisors to prepare for this competition.” 

VCCCD selects Dr. Roberto Gonzalez as president of Oxnard College, Dr. Claudia Lourido-Habib as president of Ventura College

CAMARILLO — Following a nationwide search and the approval of the VCCCD Board of Trustees, Chancellor Dr. Rick MacLennan is excited to announce the selection of Dr. Roberto Gonzalez for the position of President, Oxnard College and Dr. Claudia Lourido-Habib for President, Ventura College.

With expertise in both student services and academic affairs, Dr. Gonzalez is recognized as an inclusive, equity-minded leader prioritizing the student experience. Chancellor MacLennan said, “Dr. Gonzalez is celebrated as a student-focused leader,” emphasizing his commitment to meeting diverse student needs. Dr. Gonzalez is also expected to officially begin his role on July 1, 2024.

… With a commitment to enhancing students’ social and economic mobility through higher education, Dr. Lourido-Habib epitomizes the core mission of community colleges, being herself a first-generation community college graduate. Chancellor MacLennan said, “Dr. Lourido-Habib is highly recognized as a collaborative and visible leader,” praising her community engagement and her fierce advocacy for celebrating and supporting all students. She is set to officially assume her role on July 8, 2024.

This year’s exhibit will run through May 10 at the Ann Foxworthy Gallery at the college’s Santa Maria campus and features work in a wide range of mediums from students across the college’s fine arts programs. SANTA BARBARA — Michael Yang, formerly a paraplanner with Registered Investment Advisory firm Arlington Financial Advisors, has stepped into a new role as financial planner for the company after completing the rigorous requirements to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™.

Yang, who joined Arlington Financial Advisors in February 2021, completed the demanding CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) Certification Professional Education Program after more than a year of study and passed the exam needed to earn the nationally recognized CFP® designation.

MICOP Launches 12th Annual Tequio Scholarship Fund

Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) hosted Tequio Rising on March 22nd, 2024, at Ventura County Community Foundation’s headquarters at 4001 Mission Oaks Blvd in Camarillo. During Tequio Rising, MICOP raised $57,700, surpassing the original goal of $50,000! This year marks the highest amount raised in MICOP history for Tequio Rising! 

LA Posada Grand Opening Attracts Hundreds from Our Community

La Posada is an 80-unit temporary supportive housing community serving people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in South Santa Barbara County. Permanent housing is the longer-term goal, and La Posada closes the gap between living outdoors and housing stability, where residents can be safe and receive the critical supportive services needed. La Posada is a public-private collaboration between DignityMoves, the County of Santa Barbara, and Good Samaritan Shelter, the service provider and operator.

VENTURA — The Ventura County Continuum of Care Alliance has released the official results for the 2024 Ventura County Homeless Point in Time Count. The executive summary, which can be viewed here, comprises details and key findings of people experiencing homelessness who were surveyed and observed on January 24, 2024. This includes those who met the federal definition of homelessness which includes those living unsheltered or in places not meant for human habitation, as well as those staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing on the night of January 23.

Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara honors City Net as Outstanding Community Partner of the Year

SANTA BARBARA — The Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara honored City Net as their Outstanding Community Partner of the Year. The Housing Authority created its annual partner award as a way of recognizing and thanking organizations and businesses that help change lives for the better. The supportive services provided to clients through a collaboration with City Net are an essential part of the Housing Authority’s holistic service delivery approach. Founded in 2005 in Long Beach, California, their mission is based on a commitment to break the cycle of homelessness in the communities they serve by connecting neighbors experiencing homelessness to transformative care and innovative housing solutions.  

CSUCI to bestow honorary doctorates on two county leaders whose lives were shaped by higher education

CAMARILLO — Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF) Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Bechtel and retired CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI) Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) counselor Angela Timmons will each receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during CSUCI’s 2024 Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 18.

Timmons’ support for the University includes developing a community for CSUCI’s Black students, and supporting countless of CSUCI students during their most challenging moments when she was a counselor with CAPS.
