“You Are the Healer: The Truth About Self-Healing”

Conversations are shaped by lived experience, emerging research, and open inquiry, allowing for reflection, listening, and honest exchange. Rather than aiming for conclusions, the evening invites curiosity, nuance, and multiple perspectives to coexist in the room.
Beyond the dialogue, The District House is about community. Enjoy refreshments, meet fellow attendees, and build relationships that often continue beyond the evening itself. What emerges is a shared sense of presence and connection—created not by the topic alone, but by the people who gather and the care taken to hold the space.

RECAP: “Joseph Grimes Opened With His Own Death, and the Room Followed”

Most people build up to their trauma. Joseph handed his over early and unadorned, the way you’d mention a job you used to have. He’s died twice and come back both times. He grew up around Alan Watts, Joseph Campbell, and a lineage of Chan Buddhist monks, and he’s written books on Zen, Platonism, and his own near-death experiences. He’s toured UC campuses lecturing on NDEs. Any one of those facts could have become a pedestal. He talked about all of it instead the way a favorite professor talks about the thing that changed their life: warmly, a little funny, and completely at ease with his own story.
That posture set the tone for everything that followed. Everyone in the circle felt like they’d been let into a conversation that had been running for years before they walked in.

Interactive Workshop: “Descent to the Underworld, Exploring the Shadow Side”
Description: Mythic figures like Persephone, Inanna, and Hercules all shared one thing, they had to descend before they could rise, and so do we. In this immersive workshop, Dr. Kathy Gruver will guide participants into their own inner underworld through visualization, reflection, journaling, and symbolic exploration, creating a safe and grounded space to meet the hidden aspects of self that have long been avoided, suppressed, or misunderstood. Together you’ll explore emotional triggers, fears, and patterns without judgment, reclaim disowned parts of your identity, and begin transforming shadow material into insight, compassion, and personal power. This is not about fixing yourself; it is about meeting yourself fully, because when we are willing to descend, we create the real possibility to rise.
