SANTA BARBARA — Sullivan Goss is excited to announce a new exhibition of paintings by MARIA RENDÓN. Mysterious, luminous abstractions of the forms and phenomena of nature will enrich the largest room of the gallery for the months of November and December.

Combining water-soluble paints like acrylic and flashe with collected rain water, Rendón allows both her intuition and the paint some free reign before channeling it with astonishing control to reveal the composition. The resulting paintings are as enigmatic as they are evocative. Some are clearly rooted in her experience of landscapes she’s seen both locally and travelling. Others call to mind natural forces and the spectacle they sometimes make. And then there are the others… the ones that defy categorization or explanation. Paintings like The Invisible Web or River Rock Edge sit right on the knife edge between total abstraction and depiction, requiring that the viewer pause, settle, and see what comes to mind.

A new catalog about the artist has been produced with essays by the former Curator of American Art at L.A. County Museum of Art Dr. Bruce Robertson and artist and adjunct L.A.C.M.A. curator Aurora Van Zoelen Cortés. It will be available for sale at the gallery.

Maria Rendón earned her first B.F.A. at the Universidad Anahuac in México City. She earned a second B.F.A. at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where she later taught. After years of working as a top-tier illustrator, she went back to school to get her M.F.A. at U.C.S.B. in 2014. In the past, she served on the Board of the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Santa Barbara as an artist advocate. She has shown perennially with Sullivan Goss since 2013. This will be her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.
