PEOPLE OF THE WEST

Episode #1: First Contact

2026 USA 60 minutes

Documentary   PG-13

In English

People of the West is a groundbreaking documentary series that brings to light the authentic history of Native Californians, challenging conventional narratives and revealing stories that have been overlooked for generations. Through intimate interviews, archival footage, and stunning cinematography, this series explores the rich cultural heritage, resilience, and ongoing struggles of California’s indigenous communities.

Before colonization, California is a world of ceremony, sovereignty, and sacred balance, then everything changes. On Kumeyaay Ipai land in 1542, a teenager’s coming of age ceremony collides with the arrival of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. Guided by tribal protocols, the village greets the strangers in cautious diplomacy, until Spain’s Requerimiento reveals conquest masked as faith. A clash over fishing rights ignites violence, and two children are abducted, foreshadowing centuries of dispossession. Through the voices of California Indian scholars and cultural bearers, the episode reframes first contact from an Indigenous perspective, fusing oral history, expert insight, and cinematic dramatization to set the tone for the series that follows.

Each episode delves deep into different aspects of Native Californian life, from traditional practices and spiritual beliefs to contemporary challenges and triumphs in the modern world.

Set in the summer of 1949 amidst the rubble of a defeated Germany in the aftermath of World War II, Fatherland centers on the relationship between the Nobel Prize–winning novelist Thomas Mann (Zischler) and his daughter Erika Mann (Hüller) -actress, writer, and rally driver. Returning home after sixteen years of exile in the US, Thomas Mann must face not only a divided fatherland, but also a deep fissure within his own family, one that is both politically charged and emotionally challenging. As father and daughter embark on a fictionalized road trip across a torn Germany- still visibly scarred by battle and simultaneously in denial of its evils and culpability- they travel from US-dominated Frankfurt in the west to Soviet controlled Weimar in the east.
