About Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement in Galveston, Texas. General Order No. 3, declared the freedom of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate states, enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation signed two years earlier. In 2021, Juneteenth National Independence Day became a federal holiday, the first holiday added since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
