Ventura County Contractors Association announces 2011 scholarship recipients

Twelve students receive scholarships to continue education in the construction industry

Francisco Cancinco of California Polytechnic at Pomona; Eric Pinuelas, Adolfo Camarillo High School and John Lopez of California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo were among the 12 Ventura County students who received a total of $6,775 through the 2011 Ray Prueter Memorial Career in Construction Program presented by the Ventura County Contractors Association. “Providing assistance to young people who wish to enter the trades is a cornerstone of our organization to help perpetuate a new generation of construction professionals,” Tommy Tatangelo, president, stated in a media release.

This is the ninth year VCCA membership has supported local students pursuing a career in the construction industry. Scholarships were financed through proceeds from the VCCA’s annual Ted Flesher Memorial Golf Tournament.

Besides Cancinco, Pinuelas and Lopez, recipients included Geoffrey Douglas, University of California at Santa Barbara; Benjamin Tunigold, Ventura Community College; Scott Raymond, Rio Mesa High School; Karina White, Colorado State University; Kemper Whaley, California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo; Chris Ponce, Nordhoff High School in Ojai; Jenna Collins, Penn State; Joshua Davis, Oaks Christian in Thousand Oaks; and Christopher Waechter, Foothill Technology High School in Ventura.

Five of the students are currently in high school students and seven individuals are currently enrolled in college.

Applicants were recommended by owners, partners, officers or employees of a local construction-oriented business for pursuing a construction-related career such as architecture, engineering, surveying, construction management or a building trade.

Established in 1946, the VCCA is a non-profit membership association of qualified general contractors, subcontractors, building material suppliers and many other leading construction industry businesses, current membership encompasses more than 750 members.
