| Hi Friend,
On Tuesday, November 18th, the Oxnard City Council faces a defining choice: will they stand with our community or take a bad deal from a polluting corporation that has spent decades deceiving and putting profit before people? Join us at City Council on Tuesday at 6:00 PM to make your voice heard and stand up for environmental justice in Oxnard.
Earlier this year, Oxnard City Council passed a resolution (6-0) opposing a third extension for the Ormond Beach Generating Station (OBGS), an old polluting power plant in South Oxnard, beyond 2026. Now the city is considering going back on their word, after GenOn offered the city a deal to keep the toxic plant running for four more years in exchange for money for city investments.
This proposal presents a false choice – forcing Oxnard to choose between finally shutting down the power plant and cleaning up the coast or funding community benefits.
Right now, GenOn is setting the terms to serve their own interest – again. But we think a better deal is possible. One that would allow responsible clean energy development with community benefits for South Oxnard, without an unnecessary extension of a dirty old power plant. It’s time for the city to turn the tables and ensure that our community decides the terms of any agreement.
We’re calling on the City Council to renegotiate this deal – and we need you to help us flood council chambers on Tuesday to join our call for justice.
Our Demands
We call on City Council to:
- Renegotiate this deal, no extension of the power plant should be part of the proposal.
- Host a public town hall in February to discuss South Oxnard’s energy future and explore clean energy solutions without corporate and federal pressure.
- Create a South Oxnard community commission to ensure residents lead outreach, the town hall, and all related decisions – with environmental justice at the center.
Decisions that affect South Oxnard must be informed by the people who live there. Supporting another extension without community input continues the long legacy of environmental racism and injustice in South Oxnard.
Take Action
Sign our petition urging the Oxnard City Council to renegotiate the deal without extending the power plant. And be there Tuesday, November 18th, at 6:00 PM to tell City Council:
- Stand with the people of Oxnard and protect our coast, our health, and our future.
- Do not bow to a corporation and pressure from a deeply unpopular administration.
Yours in the fight for environmental justice,
Lucas Zucker and Hazel Davalos
