VENTURA — September is Pedestrian Safety Month in California, and the City of Ventura reminds drivers and walkers alike to take extra care when sharing streets. Whether you’re heading to school, work, or enjoying Ventura’s neighborhoods, walking should always be a safe and easy option.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,148 pedestrians were killed in traffic collisions across the United States in 2024. In California alone, pedestrian deaths account for over 24% of all traffic-related fatalities.
“Creating safer streets requires collaboration,” said Jeff Hereford, Principal Engineer for the City of Ventura. “By working closely with our Police Department, we’re combining enforcement with smart street design to make walking, biking, and driving safer. Together, we’re committed to building a community where every trip begins and ends safely.”
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable in collisions. A driver traveling at 35 MPH is far more likely to cause a deadly crash than one traveling at 20 MPH.
“Every step we take towards greater pedestrian safety is a step towards saving lives,” said Sergeant Mark Knackstedt of the Ventura Police Department. “Safety begins with each of us, whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot. Small actions like slowing down, putting away distractions, and yielding at crosswalks can make a life-saving difference.”
The City of Ventura encourages residents to follow these safety reminders:
Drivers
- Slow down, especially near intersections and crosswalks.
- Stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Never drive impaired.
- Avoid distractions such as texting or eating—keep your focus on the road.
Pedestrians
- Be predictable—use crosswalks where drivers expect to see you.
- Look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- At night, wear bright or reflective clothing or carry a flashlight.
- Stay alert—keep your phone down and eyes up when crossing.
