Drone technology and increased patrols used for enforcement

VENTURA — As Independence Day celebrations approach, the Ventura Police Department (VPD) is ramping up efforts to prevent illegal fireworks activity by increasing patrols and expanding the use of drone technology for the second consecutive year.

This proactive enforcement strategy builds on the success of 2024, when the department responded to over 300 fireworks-related 911 calls and issued $9,000 in citations through drone deployments that helped pinpoint illegal activity in real time.

In 2025, VPD is increasing its drone enforcement teams and deploying them throughout Ventura in areas with historically high levels of complaints. Officers will use drone technology to detect, document, and support enforcement of illegal fireworks violations. At the same time, VPD will maintain a visible presence at the Pushem-Pullem Parade, Downtown Street Fair, the Ventura College fireworks show, and throughout the beach area. Fireworks patrol units will also be deployed citywide during the evening hours, alongside drone teams and regular patrol officers, to ensure rapid response and enforcement coverage.

“This isn’t about dampening holiday spirit, it’s about preventing serious injuries, fires, and trauma,” said Commander Ryan Weeks. “Illegal fireworks can cause irreversible harm, from burns and wildfires to distress for veterans and individuals with sensory sensitivities. Drone enforcement is helping us get smarter and faster at stopping this activity before it escalates.”

The City of Ventura continues to encourage safe and legal celebrations. Families are invited to attend the Fourth of July Street Fair and Pushem-Pullem Parade from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Downtown Ventura. In the evening, the Ventura Rotary Club Fireworks Show will begin at 9:00 p.m. at Ventura College.

Residents are strongly encouraged to help keep neighborhoods safe by reporting illegal fireworks activity. If you witness fireworks in progress that pose an immediate threat to life or property, call 911. For non-urgent reports, call the 24/7 non-emergency line at 805-650-8010. Callers should be prepared to provide the location of the activity, a description of those involved, and any other relevant details to assist responding officers.

Community members are also reminded to celebrate responsibly. Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or prescription medication is illegal and endangers everyone on the road. Use a designated driver, rideshare service, or public transportation to get home safely.
