New Website Aims to Educate Community on Invasion of Agricultural Pests
|
Visit our new landing page at ventura.org/saveourfood to educate yourself on how to protect our locally grown food and prevent the spread of two highly invasive pests threatening our homegrown fruits and vegetables. Learn about quarantine guidelines, how to recognize signs of infection, and what to do if you suspect your trees are affected.
The website is part of the County of Ventura’s ongoing effort to mitigate not one, but two highly invasive pests. The Asian Citrus Psyllid insect carries the deadly Huanglongbing (HLB) disease which causes trees and fruit to turn green, bitter and ultimately kills them.
Meanwhile, the Queensland fruit fly is destroying our fruits and vegetables, infesting them with larva and making them in edible.
Let’s #SaveOurFood and abide by the current pest quarantines in California, especially here at home.
Please DO NOT share your homegrown fruits, vegetables or any plant material. Doing so could inadvertently introduce pests and tree disease to other areas of the county, and even the state. Our goal is to slow the spread of these pests.
Suspect your tree is infected? Call the California Department of Food and Agriculture pest hotline at 1-800-491-1899. CDFA can schedule a time to test your tree. Learn more from the County of Ventura’s Agricultural Commissioner’s Office webpage here: ventura.org/saveourfood
