Construction Begins on San Ysidro Roundabout in Montecito

The San Ysidro Roundabout will improve traffic flow at the intersection at San Ysidro Road, North Jameson Lane, and the northbound Highway 101 on-and off-ramps at San Ysidro Road. This single-lane roundabout will be planted with native and drought-tolerant landscaping, and have crosswalks around the roundabout with median islands to enable pedestrians to cross one direction of traffic at a time.

Bicyclists can either take the lane through the roundabout or dismount and use crosswalks.

Roundabout construction is scheduled from March 2023 through the end of 2023.

? Northbound Off-Ramp at Olive Mill Road will be continue to be closed, with scheduled re-opening upon completion of the Olive Mill Roundabout. Drivers should use the Northbound Off-Ramp at San Ysidro Road.

? Northbound On-Ramp At San Ysidro will be closed, with scheduled re-opening in early 2025 (for roundabout and highway work).

This project is being delivered early to help enhance local traffic circulation due to regional funding and Measure A.

Beach Closure

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has issued a “BEACH CLOSURE” for all recreational water contact at Butterfly Beach within one-quarter (¼) mile of the storm drain outfall in response to a spill of untreated sewage reaching ocean waters along this beach shoreline.

Santa Barbara County Environmental Health Services was notified by the Montecito Sanitary District of a broken sewer force main on Channel Drive. The broken pipe is currently being repaired and no additional sewage is anticipated to be discharged to the storm drain. It was estimated that the spill involved a release of approximately 6,650 gallons of sewage. As a result, Butterfly Beach within one-quarter (¼) mile of the storm drain outfall has been closed to recreational water contact. The affected area has been posted with signs warning the public to avoid contact with the water until sample results indicate the water is safe for recreational use. Contact with sewage-contaminated water increases the risk for certain types of illnesses such as rashes, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The County of Santa Barbara implements a variety of programs to protect public health and enhance environmental quality of County watersheds and beaches. Working to improve water quality by reducing or treating sources of pollution is a multi-faceted task. Remembering Patricia Schroeder

A hero died this week. Some might say it’s weird that I followed the career of a Congresswoman when I was in grade school and junior high, but I was struck by Patricia Schroeder’s poise and calm manner in both parry and attack. In the face of a male-dominated Congress, Patricia stood up and spoke out, leading the effort to pass landmark legislation supporting mothers and children. Congresswoman Schroeder blazed the trail for future generations of women in civic life. During this Women’s History Month, I want to take the time to remember her legacy and contributions so that my daughters’ generation can continue her fight for women’s rights and fairness.

Commemorating Tibet Day

Last week, I was honored to join the Santa Barbara Friends of Tibet to raise the Tibet flag at the County Administration Building, and commemorate Santa Barbara Tibet Day. I have sponsored a resolution proclaiming that we as a county recognize the importance of standing up for the basic, fundamental human rights of the Tibetan people, and commemorating March 10th as Tibet Day in Santa Barbara County.
