Local Program Strengthens the Bonds between Parent, Child and Community
WESTLAKE VILLAGE — The Yarrow Family YMCA (sevymca.org) hosted a free community BBQ and outdoor movie night for Conejo Valley families through its Adventure Guide and Trailblazer programs. More than 150 parents and kids attended the August 20 event.
“The welcome BBQ was a chance for families to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones as we embark on a fresh year of discovery, growth and fun,” says Tori Cusack, Youth and Family Program Director at the Yarrow Family YMCA.
The Adventure Guide (K-2nd grade) and Trailblazer (3rd-6th grade) programs were paused during the height of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, but relaunched in 2022. Participants took part in camping trips to the Kern River, Big Bear, El Capitan and Camp Surf. Monthly events included BMX riding, a snow day, tree planting, learning wilderness survival skills and viewing the holiday lights at Descanso Gardens.
“Beyond creating lasting outdoor memories between parent and child, the Adventure Guide and Trailblazer programs fortify our connection to our community,” said Jesse Monroy Mashaw, Federation Navigator for the Trailblazers program. “The welcome BBQ is just the beginning of another great year of adventures to share together.”
Families were served pizza, hot dogs, and refreshments. The Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge contributed BBQ tri-tip sandwiches. Attendees participated in outdoor games before The Bad Guys was played at sundown with popcorn.
Signups for the 2022-23 program are still being accepted. Activities begin in September and run through June 2023. For more information and to sign up go to www.sevymca.org/adventure-guides
