The GRAND Re-opening of Friendship Center
A Whimsical Update from Ellen Willis-Conger, Operations Director
Remember when Dorothy and friends arrived at the Emerald City? They got new clothes, new hairdos, more stuffing for the Scarecrow, Tinman got a polishing, The Lion was groomed and fluffed to the end of his cute little tail!
And so it has been at Friendship Center.
Our Board of Directors provided an immense boost of organizing, cleaning, planting, rearranging of furniture—Oh my! We have had windows washed, patio power washed, new bulletin boards up, and patio arranged for dining and activities—Oh my! Staff preparing activities, nutritious and delicious menus, and spaces indoors and out for both of our Cohorts of 10—Oh my!
We are adhering to safety precautions and getting our masks on in order to welcome you on August 2. We have been journeying toward this time together, even though we have been apart.
We (Board of Directors and Staff of Friendship Center) look forward to seeing you in person on August 2!
The Fun Is in the Details
Part-time Re-Opening to
Transition to Full Time
Friendship Center Senior Day Care Program will reopen at its Montecito facility for in-person programming Aug. 2. As an intermediate step toward fully reopening, programs will be offered on a part-time basis, Mondays to Thursdays.
Members will enroll in a morning group from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or afternoon group from 1:30 to 5 p.m. during which Friendship Center staff will lead safe, socially distanced, engaging activities designed to exercise the physical, emotional, cognitive and social aspects of the body and brain.
What’s Next
on the
Agenda?
Friendship Center staff will prepare and serve a hearty snack with fruit or vegetable and a protein. Water will be available to all members at all times.
As Friendship Center transitions back to regular full-day programming, virtual programming via Zoom will continue from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays to Fridays and from 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays.
This intermediate, hybrid program is designed to meet member-families’ needs as they adjust to the lifting of COVID-19 quarantine. All staff as well as members will be required to wear masks, social distance and have temperature and symptoms checks upon entering Friendship Center.

The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors is doing it again! This time, instead of delicious Mexican food from Los Agaves Restaurant, the SBOAR is holding a golf tournament fundraiser Friday, Sept. 10 to benefit Friendship Center. Check below for more information.
In Memoriam
By Dana Jeanne Norris
Ruth Anne (Cooper) Norris passed away peacefully on July 14, 2021, in Lompoc, California at the age of 88.
Ruth was the eldest of three daughters born to Rev. Morris and Ruth (Reidenbach) Cooper. Born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, she grew up in Greenville, where her father was the Administrator of St Paul’s Children’s Home and Home for the Aging. Surrounded by music from the day she was born, Ruth attended Heidelberg College, where she majored in voice and minored in piano. It was also there where she met her future husband, Duane Norris, whom she married in August 22, 1955.
Ruth began teaching at Los Berros Elementary School in Lompoc from 1969 to 1991, where she incorporated music into everything she taught. Studying Native Americans? Out came the rhythm band instruments. Chinese New Year? Asian songs. Music was everywhere.
Ruth is survived by her three children, Dana Jeanne Norris, Carolyn (Brian) Callihan and Sam Norris, her honorary granddaughter Dayna Biden, a sister, Ginny Groover in Ohio and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Gene Norris, and her sister Lois May Eastlick.

Virtual Programming to Continue as We Transition
At Friendship Center, we foster strong partnerships with family caregivers. Even as we transition toward in-person services, we will still continue with Zoom services in some capacity. Staff is still available to show caregivers how to help members stay connected via Zoom.
Keeping our members engaged with friends and activities while we implement the transition back to in-person activities is our continued goal. We are here to make this possible.
For more information about enrolling, please contact Family Services Manager Kim Larsen at: kim@friendshipcentersb.org or (805) 969-0859, ext. 2.
See You Soon!
