Stunning New Exhibits and Free Opera on 1st Thursday

Get ready to see Mary Cassatt in a new light. Come see Cassatt & Friends, a new exhibition that offers an intimate look at the creative connections between drawing and printmaking among Mary Cassatt and her contemporaries. While Cassatt is best known for her luminous paintings, she was also an accomplished printmaker—and SBMA’s permanent collection includes a number of her printed works. At the heart of the exhibition is Simone in a White Bonnet Seated with Clasped Hands (No.1), a unique counterproof created by dampening a pastel drawing and pressing it onto another sheet of paper to transfer the pigment and create a mirror image.
Featuring works by Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Cézanne, and James McNeill Whistler, Cassatt & Friends reveals the tactile, hands-on processes behind these artists’ works. The visible traces of the artists’ hand offer an intimate glimpse into their creative practices—and a striking contrast to the polished, mass-produced printed material of their time. Come discover this fascinating side of Cassatt and her circle, now on view at SBMA.
