SANTA MARIA — For a second consecutive year, Allan Hancock College’s Fire Academy will receive $50,000 through the Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) to provide protective equipment and scholarships, helping reduce financial barriers for students pursuing careers in firefighting.
“Programs like the Metallica Scholars Initiative continue to create meaningful opportunities for our students while helping address California’s workforce needs,” said Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D. “This continued investment helps ensure more students can complete their training and begin careers serving their communities.”
All Within My Hands (AWMH), the nonprofit foundation established by the members and management of Metallica, launched the Metallica Scholars Initiative in 2019 in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). It continues to support career education programs that prepare students for high-demand occupations, including firefighting, emergency medical services, healthcare, manufacturing, construction trades and transportation.
Although many local agencies help offset costs associated with law enforcement academies, Fire Academy cadets are often responsible for purchasing their own uniforms, boots, protective equipment and other required gear before beginning their careers. For many cadets, those expenses can become a significant obstacle to entering the profession.
Hancock’s fire academy has trained firefighters for more than 50 years and serves a diverse student population that includes veterans, returning students, parents and first-generation college students. The academy also hosts its annual Women’s Fire Camp, encouraging more women to explore careers in the fire service.
“The continued support from the Metallica Scholars Initiative helps remove financial barriers for our cadets and allows them to focus on the training required to become firefighters,” said AHC Fire Academy Coordinator Leonard Champion. “We’re grateful for this investment in our students and the future of the fire service.”
