SANTA PAULA — As Southern California prepares for a potentially active winter storm season, the City of Santa Paula is partnering with the County of Ventura to promote community preparedness, share important safety information, and help residents prepare for possible impacts associated with El Niño conditions.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), strong El Niño conditions could contribute to a wetter-than-normal winter across Southern California. While the severity of storms remains uncertain, periods of heavy rainfall can increase the risk of flooding, landslides, debris flows, and hazardous road conditions, particularly in low-lying areas and locations previously affected by wildfires.
In coordination with the County of Ventura, the City will support the regional “Prepare Today, Storm Ready Tomorrow” campaign by sharing preparedness resources, amplifying official emergency communications, and encouraging residents to take proactive steps before severe weather arrives.
The City urges residents and businesses to take the following precautions:
- Sign up for VC Alert: Receive emergency notifications, including evacuation warnings and orders, in English and Spanish.
- Prepare your home: Clear gutters, inspect roofs, and keep drainage areas free of debris.
- Build an emergency kit: Keep essential supplies, including water, food, medications, flashlights, and important documents.
- Know your risks: Identify potential flood hazards, establish an evacuation plan, and prepare a Go Bag.
- Prepare for flooding: Obtain sandbags ahead of storms if your property is at risk.
- Practice road safety: Never drive through flooded roads. Remember, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
As winter approaches, residents should stay informed by monitoring official sources for weather updates and emergency notifications:
· Winter preparedness, sandbags, and VC Alert registration: ready.venturacounty.gov
· Emergency incidents and evacuation updates: VCEmergency.com
· Weather forecasts and alerts: weather.gov/lox
The City of Santa Paula reminds residents that early preparation can make a significant difference during severe weather. By taking proactive steps and staying informed, the community can help reduce risks and strengthen its readiness for the winter season.
