LOMPOC — The countdown ends. Engines ignite. A rocket climbs into the sky, leaving a bright trail above the California coast.
For a few unforgettable moments, all eyes are on the sky. In Lompoc, this kind of space-age excitement is part of the destination.
Welcome to Space Country, where you can watch a launch, explore the technology behind the missions, and get an up-close look at space history at the Space and Missile Technology Center (SAMTEC).
Step Inside the Space and Missile Technology Center
The Space and Missile Technology Center (SAMTEC) brings decades of space and missile history together under one roof. Its collection of historical models, artifacts, and dioramas traces the evolution of technology from Cold War-era missile programs to today’s satellite and commercial launch missions.
Lompoc’s space legacy took off in the late 1950s, when Vandenberg launched its first missile in 1958 and sent the world’s first polar-orbiting satellite into space in 1959. That pioneering era helped pave the way for the space missions we see today.
SAMTEC gives visitors a closer look at the technology that made these missions possible, from early missile systems to the satellites we rely on today for navigation, communications, and weather forecasting.
Whether you’re a lifelong space enthusiast, a curious traveler, or a family looking for something out of the ordinary, SAMTEC offers an engaging way to connect the history on display with the space activity that still defines this corner of the Central Coast.

Catch a Rocket Launch in Lompoc

SAMTEC tells the story behind spaceflight, but watching a rocket roar into the sky is its own adventure.
Vandenberg Space Force Base has roughly 80 launches planned for 2026, so there’s plenty of space action on the horizon.
While access to the base is restricted, you can still catch the show from several public viewing spots around Lompoc.
Here are three places to add to your launch-day plans:
Beattie Park: Spread out on the open lawns, bring a blanket, and settle in for the show. Picnic tables, restrooms, and a playground make this a relaxed option for families.
Ocean Park: Want a coastal backdrop? This spot offers a chance to watch the rocket climb into view, with the added bonus of ocean air and a playground. Parking is limited, and the park closes at sunset, so plan accordingly.Allan Hancock College: About nine miles from the launch site, the college offers a partial view of the launch pad and a good view of the rocket as it rises. Bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens, and keep in mind that parking may be limited during class hours.
Launch-day tips
- Check the latest launch schedule before you go. Launch times can change.
- Check the weather and coastal fog forecast for the clearest view.
- Confirm your viewing spot is open and arrive early to find parking.
- Bring water, snacks, layers, and binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens.
- Keep your plans flexible. Launches can be delayed or scrubbed due to weather or operational needs.
