VENTURA — The City of Ventura is now accepting applications for its inaugural citywide Community Academy, a free eight-week program designed to give community members an inside look at how local government works and the people behind the services that keep Ventura running.
Participants will visit City facilities, hear directly from City staff, leadership, and elected officials, and gain a deeper understanding of the programs, services, and decisions that shape the Ventura community.
“This new citywide Community Academy is an opportunity to build meaningful connections between residents and their local government,” said City Manager Bill Ayub. “By providing a behind-the-scenes look at City operations, we hope participants leave with a greater understanding of how City services are delivered, the challenges we face, and the many ways they can stay involved in helping shape Ventura’s future.”
The Academy will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. from September 17 through November 5, with sessions hosted at various City facilities throughout Ventura. Participants will experience behind-the-scenes tours, engage directly with City staff and leadership, and learn how City services support the community, how priorities are established, and how residents can become more involved in local government.
Applications are available online and must be submitted by Friday, July 31, 2026. Approximately 30 participants will be selected.
The citywide Community Academy is offered every two years, alternating with the Police Community Academy.
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Live or work in the City of Ventura
- Submit an application
- Participate in an interview
- Commit to attending all eight program sessions
