Ventura Music Festival — Latin jazz lights up Ventura with events on July 20, 23, 24, 25, 26

On July 25th, the Majestic Ventura Theater becomes ground zero for a night of pure rhythm, soul, and fire. Two masters. Two orchestras. One unforgettable night.

JUSTO ALMARIO headlines with his Afro-Colombian Jazz Ensemble. The Colombian-born saxophonist was plucked out of Berklee by Mongo Santamaría and went on to a career that’s included Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, Tito Puente, Herb Alpert, and Cachao. His influence runs so deep that Colombia named a festival in his honor. He performs music from his newest album, Alegrías de Coco y Anís, ahead of its physical CD release in August, and Ventura Theater is a significant California showcase for it.

Sharing the bill: JEREMY BOSCH, 33, a three-time Grammy winner who came up through the Spanish Harlem Orchestra tradition. One of the most electrifying young voices in salsa and Latin jazz today, Bosch fronts his own orchestra in a set built for dancing, not sitting still. Expect a show packed with energy from a rising star already sharing stages with the genre’s icons.

Almario helped build the tradition. Bosch is one of the artists carrying it into its next chapter.

Angel Blue

FRIDAY, JULY 24

Angel Blue is one of opera’s most celebrated sopranos today, recognized worldwide for her warm soprano voice and deeply affecting performances of beloved roles including Aida, Tosca, Violetta in La Traviata, Bess in Porgy and Bess, Mimì in La bohème, and Liu in Turandot. She will be joined on stage by pianist Bryan Wagorn.

Beethoven’s Choice

THURSDAY, JULY 23

Beethoven’s Choice is a Classical Edge talk and concert, a meeting between music and the story behind the notes. Part concert, part history, and part discovery, renowned music educator and classical violinist Nuvi Mehta will be joined onstage by Greg Anderson, celebrated pianist of Anderson & Roe. Together, they’ll take us on an educational journey featuring the music of Beethoven.

Akropolis Reed Quintet

SUNDAY, JULY 26

Described as “a sonically daring ensemble who specializes in performing new works with charisma and integrity” by BBC Music Magazine, the quintet comprises five reed players who have commissioned and premiered more than 200 works by living composers, making them true pioneers of the reed quintet as a modern genre.
