At (the Sept. 1) Board meeting, I was honored to recognize 10-year-old Girl Scout Junior Gemma Kleinzweig for an incredible act of courage.
Earlier this year, the local 6th grader was attending a Girl Scout camporee when her best friend and fellow Scout suddenly began choking on a marshmallow and couldn’t breathe. Without hesitation, Gemma recognized the emergency and sprang into action. She administered back blows, successfully clearing the obstruction. She then stayed by her friend’s side, comforting and reassuring her until adults arrived.
For her quick thinking, bravery and compassion, Gemma was awarded the Girl Scouts of the USA Medal of Honor, one of the highest national honors in Girl Scouting and an award reserved for those who demonstrate exceptional courage in saving or attempting to save a life.
Gemma’s story is a powerful reminder that courage, leadership and service to others have no age limit. We are incredibly proud to have young people like Gemma in our Ventura County community!
