VENTURA — Construction has begun on the Ventura River Trail Improvements Project (VRTIP), a rails-to-trails amenity originally constructed in the late 1990s. The project, funded by a Caltrans Clean California grant of nearly $5 million, will revitalize approximately 1.8 miles of this highly used corridor.
The City of Ventura, joined by local elected officials, staff, and community groups, gathered on Thursday, May 2, 2024, for an official groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of this long-awaited project.
“This initiative is an example of our dedication to sustainability, recreation, and fostering connections within our community,” said Mayor Joe Schroeder. “By prioritizing a greener, healthier, and more accessible environment, we are actively working towards improving the well-being of our residents.”
Key components of the project include repaving the trail, implementing a comprehensive wayfinding and signage program, improving accessibility at crucial points, installing solar lighting, and introducing various beautification and urban greening elements.
The VRTIP represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance Ventura’s active transportation, provide more infrastructure geared toward pedestrians and cyclists, and connect communities more healthily and sustainably.

VENTURA — Ha comenzado la construccio?n del Proyecto de Mejoras del Sendero del Ri?o Ventura (VRTIP), una amenidad de rieles a senderos originalmente construida a finales de la de?cada de 1990. El VRTIP, financiado por una subvencio?n Clean California de Caltrans por casi $5 millones, revitalizara? aproximadamente 1.8 millas de este corredor altamente utilizado.
La Ciudad de Ventura, junto con funcionarios electos locales, personal y grupos comunitarios, se reunieron el jueves 2 de mayo de 2024, para una ceremonia oficial de inicio de obras para celebrar el comienzo de este proyecto tan esperado.
“Esta iniciativa es un ejemplo de nuestra dedicacio?n a la sostenibilidad, recreacio?n y fomento de conexiones dentro de nuestra comunidad”, dijo el alcalde Joe Schroeder. “Al priorizar un entorno ma?s verde, saludable y accesible, estamos trabajando activamente para mejorar el bienestar de nuestros residentes”.
