Dr. Kusay’s addition will support HSVC’s efforts to expand access to affordable veterinary care in Ventura County
OJAI — The Humane Society of Ventura County (HSVC) is thrilled to welcome Dr. Kusay to its veterinary team. A shelter medicine and high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter veterinarian with more than five years of clinical experience and 15 plus years in animal rescue, Dr. Kusay brings both deep expertise and a lifelong dedication to animal welfare to HSVC.
“I became a veterinarian because I lost my first dog to a cancer that could have been caught and treated earlier,” Dr. Kusay said. “That experience is why I’ve dedicated my career to shelter medicine, and I’m excited to continue that work at HSVC — helping give animals and their families the care and the second chances they deserve.”
A former Chicago native who has called Southern California home since the early 2000s, Dr. Kusay grew up volunteering with local shelters and rescues. Dr. Kusay earned her DVM from Western University of Health Sciences and has worked in both small and large animal medicine, including livestock and exotics.
Dr. Kusay has served as an associate veterinarian at Spay Memphis, a shelter veterinarian at Tipton County Animal Shelter in Tennessee and as a veterinary medical officer with USDA-APHIS. A longtime volunteer with Ventura County Animal Services and C.A.R.L., she led the 2023 “Gus’ Puppies” campaign, which rescued and rehomed 50 puppies from Southern California shelter euthanasia lists.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Kusay join the HSVC team,” said HSVC’s Executive Director Daniel Roselle. “Limited access to affordable veterinary care is one of the leading reasons animals end up in shelters, and adding Dr. Kusay to our team brings us one step closer to realizing our long-term vision of expanding access in our region.”
Outside of work, Dr. Kusay is an avid fosterer with a soft spot for bottle babies and senior animals. She and her husband returned to Southern California with their own family of rescues — three dogs, one cat, two goats and ten chickens.
