OXNARD — As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, a new exhibition in Oxnard invites the community to explore the game of soccer through a local perspective. The Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC), in partnership with the Consulado de México en Oxnard, presents Once Miradas, Un Balón (Eleven Gazes, One Ball)—a group exhibition that looks at fútbol as both a cultural presence and a source of artistic inspiration. The exhibit opens to the public with a reception on May 21 from 5:30-8pm and will celebrate (4) youth soccer teams with a custom jersey giveaway and hands-on activities. Once Miradas, Un Balón will be on view from May 14 – September 4, 2026. Gallery hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Admission is free.
Curated by Rafael Perea De La Cabada, the exhibition features eleven artists of Mexican and Mexican-American heritage whose work reflects the experiences and perspectives of the region. Through painting, mixed media, and visual storytelling, the artists explore identity, movement, memory, and belonging, using soccer as a shared point of reference.
Once Miradas, Un Balón looks at fútbol as part of everyday life—something that connects people across generations and communities. From local streets to larger stages, the exhibition highlights how the game brings people together.
This exhibition is part of OPAC’s continued effort to expand access to visual arts in Oxnard. A catalog will be produced at the end of the exhibition. Support for the project comes from the California Arts Council and the Port of Hueneme.
“In the context of the 2026 World Cup, this exhibition shows how art and soccer can bring people together and strengthen community,” said Cónsul Ricardo Santana Velázquez. “Both create space for connection, reflection, and shared identity across cultures.”
