THOUSAND OAKS — The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) is proud to announce the promotion of Division Chief Dan Horton to Assistant Chief of Operations.
Chief Horton’s promotion marks a significant milestone in his 25-year career with VCFD.
He has served in every rank within the department — from Firefighter through Division Chief — demonstrating a strong commitment to leadership, service, and operational excellence at each level.
Fire Chief Dustin Gardner stated, “Dan has consistently demonstrated professionalism and an unwavering commitment to our firefighters and our community. His knowledge and firefighting experience are tremendous assets to our department. Dan is exceptionally well suited to continue our tradition of operational excellence, drive service delivery innovations, and strengthen partnerships throughout our operational area and across Southern California.”
As Assistant Chief of Operations, Chief Horton will oversee the Emergency Services Bureau, including 33 fire stations across five battalions, the Wildland and Aviation division, special operations such as Hazardous Materials and Urban Search and Rescue, and the Fire Communications Center. His leadership will help guide how VCFD delivers high-quality emergency services across Ventura County.
“My goal is to further strengthen a resilient, adaptable, and forward-thinking organization — one that is well positioned to meet the evolving demands of the fire service while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and public safety,” said Horton. “I am incredibly honored by this opportunity and grateful for the 25 years I have had the privilege of serving the residents of Ventura County.”
The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) employs nearly 650 personnel and serves as the primary responder for fire, rescue, and medical emergencies across most of Ventura County, including Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Santa Paula, Ojai, and Port Hueneme. Each year, VCFD responds to more than 55,000 calls for service.
