Friend, Last month we were honored to receive an award from a regional organization focused on economic development.

As essential infrastructure, just like transportation, public health, water systems, and energy grids, housing underpins our economy and is the very foundation upon which every vibrant community is built.

But the persistent shortage of affordable homes continues to challenge our region. Businesses struggle to attract and retain talent, frontline essential workers commute from farther distances, and community members face impossible choices about where they can afford to live. Yet within these challenges lies a powerful opportunity. When we invest in housing, we invest in the future economic capacity of our entire region. A stable home supports educational success for children, improves health outcomes, strengthens the workforce, and creates the conditions for growth across all sectors.

Our focus at People’s is to continue pursuing solutions that match the scale of the need, and we are currently expanding the supply of homes through innovative approaches such as:

  • Along with the ‘build your own’ model, on which we were founded over five decades ago, we will additionally be offering a ‘buy your own’ model.
  • Forging new partnerships with school districts, helping them attract and retain talent through the provision of new housing.
  • Positioning ourselves to take advantage of new and evolving funding sources such as new markets tax credits, opportunity zones, down payment programs and low interest mortgages.

None of this work is possible without collaboration and the progress we are making is a direct result of shared commitment across government, philanthropy, and business. The recent award from EconAlliance was an honor to accept on behalf of the 250 People’s team members who currently serve our community and in recognition of the many hundreds more, who since our founding in 1970, have spent a season of their careers with us.

Let’s continue to build our communities and ensure that everyone, from seniors and families to young workers just starting out, has access to a safe, stable home they can afford.

Building Your Housing Vocabulary
Affordable housing terminology can often be complex, filled with acronyms and technical language. However, by learning and understanding these terms, you can become a stronger, more informed advocate for housing in your community!
This month, we’re highlighting Homekey+. Known in California by this title, Homekey+ is a housing development approach that focuses on acquiring and rehabilitating existing buildings that can be quickly converted or built as permanent affordable housing. This model helps communities respond more rapidly to housing needs while creating long-term, stable homes.

A Safe Home and the Support to Thrive
After years without stable housing, Leslie* and her four children finally moved into a home of their own with People’s Self-Help Housing. Shortly after, reductions to her SNAP benefits created new financial strain for the family. With limited support and growing children to care for, she reached out to her property’s social worker for assistance.

The social worker helped Leslie secure grocery store gift cards, ensuring ongoing access to essentials for her and her children. They have continued working closely to build a strong financial future and today Leslie expresses gratitude for the timely support that helped her family remain secure.*Name changed for anonymity
