Join CEC, the Society of Fearless Grandmothers Santa Barbara, and the Santa Barbara Sierra Club on the first Friday of each month to gather with fellow climate activists, students, allies, community partners, and friends. We aim to create a space where individuals can learn about regional climate change issues, take collective action, and collaborate to protect our planet. Environmental Defense Center’s Santa Barbara People’s Hearing on Offshore Oil Drilling
Friday, January 16, 2026
4:30 – 7:00 p.m.
CEC’s Environmental Hub
1219 State St., Santa Barbara
The federal government released a new 5-year offshore oil and gas leasing plan on Thanksgiving, kicking off a 60-day comment period that ends on January 23rd, 2026. Since BOEM will not host formal hearings for the public to comment, groups up and down the coast of California are hosting People’s Hearings, a grassroots alternative. Join EDC at 4:30 p.m. for pizza, soft drinks, and the chance to learn more about local organizations tabling. The program begins at 5:15, followed by guest speakers, a public comment period, and networking time. Santa Barbara will be one of at least five People’s Hearings in CA during the comment period — come use your voice to defend our beloved Central Coast from the devastating consequences of offshore oil drilling. Become a CEC Climate Steward
Tuesdays, January 27 – March 17, 2026, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Online classes via Zoom + in-person field trips
Taking bold measures to stop the climate crisis requires many of us — non-profit leaders and staff, professionals, business owners, recent college graduates, retirees, high school students, and community members — to work together. With recent federal rollbacks threatening hard-won climate progress, there has never been a more critical time to take meaningful local action. Register to join a cohort of motivated changemakers, explore climate solutions through lessons and field trips, and design a personal Stewardship Project that makes a difference in your community. Spots for the Winter 2026 cohort are filling up fast, so we encourage early registration. CEC’s Climate Stewards certification course is offered in September, January, and April. The Winter 2026 cohort will begin on Tuesday, January 27 and end on Tuesday, March 17. Classes are held on Tuesday nights from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Learn more and register.

Become a Resilience Hub and Help Your Community Prepare for Disasters
The California Central Coast faces growing challenges from extreme heat, wildfire smoke, flooding, and poor air quality. Community resilience hubs — trusted local spaces like schools, libraries, community centers, and churches — can provide aid and resources before, during, and after these events. CEC can help activate your site to:
-
Provide clean air during smoke events
-
Act as cooling locations during extreme heat
-
Distribute food
-
Serve as an emergency shelter or hub for emergency services
-
Facilitate disaster preparedness training and neighborhood organizing
-
Host off-grid charging during power outages or shutdowns
