Friend,As we approach December 21, the longest night of the year, I am reminded of the profound significance this season holds for those of us committed to ending homelessness. The winter solstice is a natural pause, a moment to reflect on the stark reality faced by individuals who endure these long nights without the comfort of shelter.
While many of us live by calendars, alarms, and screens, the sun remains the oldest measure of time. In these days of deep darkness and cold, I encourage you to take a moment to consider what these hours mean for those without warmth, food, or safety.
This year, the challenges have grown darker. Reductions in assistance programs and funding have left far too many vulnerable neighbors without the support they need. Yet, even in this stillness, there is hope. The solstice reminds us that light returns, and with it, renewal.
On behalf of our entire team, I extend heartfelt gratitude to our partners, supporters, and community members who make this work possible. May the coming weeks bring peace and joy to you and your loved ones. Together, we look forward to brighter days and stronger partnerships in 2026.

Your support opens doors…
When a People’s Self-Help Housing door opens to a new resident, it opens to so much more than just the next place to stay.
Permanent supportive housing means that lives can truly change for:
a family who has doubled up with relatives for months or years at a time
a senior who has lived under the fear of losing their independence and dignity
a young child who simply wants to keep going to the same school and have the same classmates
Your year-end gift will help us open many, many more doors.
*These rents are effective as of April 1, 2025. They are determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and are subject to change.

Building Your Housing Vocabulary
Affordable housing terminology can often be complex, filled with acronyms and technical language. However, by learning and understanding these terms, you can become a stronger, more informed advocate for housing in your community!
This month, we’re highlighting gentrification. Gentrification is the process by which neighborhoods that have experienced economic decline begin to receive new investment and attract wealthier residents. While this can improve housing and local businesses, it often leads to rising costs and the displacement of long-time residents. Understanding gentrification helps communities think critically about neighborhood change and how to balance growth with fairness.
