Throughout our country’s history during the time that I’ve been alive, we have had presidents who embraced traditional values and customs. Despite their political maneuverings and strategies, for the most part these presidents adhered to cultural norms. Some were great orators (e.g., Kennedy, Obama, Reagan) while others were not, shall we say, “out of the top grandiloquent drawer” (e.g., Nixon, Bush II, Biden, Trump).
And then there are those presidents who, for better or for worse, deviate from tradition and norms. Sometimes this is necessary for national growth and the need to enforce a moral imperative, such as when President Johnson carried forward the fight for civil rights. A large proportion of our population did not welcome this seismic challenge to white supremacy.
Currently, we have a president who seems to delight in running roughshod over American traditions. President Trump came into his second term as a much more destructive bull in a china shop than he did the first time. This time around, he knew to remove the guardrails that impeded him in the past.
Last January, immediately after his inauguration, he went to work dismantling the federal government, enfeebling the IRS, installing highly unqualified and inexperienced people in powerful government positions, destabilizing the economy, attacking venerated centers of learning, cutting sources of aid to parts of the world that relied on us for sustenance, assaulting the freedom of the press, and threatening to essentially govern unleashed.
This unprecedented trashing of tradition is exemplified quite visibly by the recent bulldozing of the White House Rose Garden. This garden was engulfed in history and tradition, so it was only a matter of time before that went, too.
The original concept of a rose garden next to the American seat of power was conceived by First Lady Edith Roosevelt in 1903. What was once an expansive green lawn that President Kennedy had requested next to the recent Rose Garden is now a bed of gravel.
Atop this former verdant carpet, press conferences, award ceremonies, and even State Dinners took place. It was where a peace treaty was signed between Jordan and Israel in 1994. President Kennedy hosted the Project Mercury astronauts here in 1963, shortly before his assassination.
And now, on a whim, President Trump decided to bulldoze this hallowed location because, as he put it, the Rose Garden “doesn’t work because the people fall.”

A lo largo de la historia de nuestro país, desde que vivo, hemos tenido presidentes que abrazaron los valores y costumbres tradicionales. A pesar de sus maniobras y estrategias políticas, en su mayoría estos presidentes se adhirieron a las normas culturales. Algunos fueron grandes oradores (p. ej., Kennedy, Obama, Reagan), mientras que otros no eran, digamos, “de los más grandilocuentes” (p. ej., Nixon, Bush II, Biden, Trump).
Y luego están aquellos presidentes que, para bien o para mal, se desvían de la tradición y las normas. A veces esto es necesario para el crecimiento nacional y la necesidad de imponer un imperativo moral, como cuando el presidente Johnson impulsó la lucha por los derechos civiles. Una gran proporción de nuestra población no vio con buenos ojos este desafío radical a la supremacía blanca.

Esta destrucción sin precedentes de la tradición se ejemplifica de forma bastante visible en la reciente demolición del Jardín de Rosas de la Casa Blanca. Este jardín estaba envuelto en historia y tradición, así que era solo cuestión de tiempo antes de que también desapareciera.
El concepto original de un jardín de rosas junto a la sede del poder estadounidense fue concebido por la primera dama Edith Roosevelt en 1903. Lo que una vez fue un extenso césped verde que el presidente Kennedy había solicitado junto al reciente jardín de rosas es ahora un lecho de grava.
Sobre esta antigua alfombra verde se celebraron conferencias de prensa, ceremonias de premiación e incluso Cenas de Estado. Fue aquí donde se firmó el tratado de paz entre Jordania e Israel en 1994. El presidente Kennedy recibió aquí a los astronautas del Proyecto Mercury en 1963, poco antes de su asesinato.
