Around mid-May last month, former president Joe Biden’s office announced his prostate cancer diagnosis. The Trump family, in an astonishing lack of class even for them, unleashed their cruelty even as Mr. Biden was jolted into confronting his mortality.
Donald Trump Jr. did not hesitate to launch a typically vicious tweet, questioning why “Doctor” Jill Biden had not issued her own diagnosis much earlier. Because, according to him, she is, after all, a “doctor.”
As anyone with any education or knowledge of the world knows, Dr. Jill Biden has the privilege of using that honorific because she earned that title in academia—not because she is a medical doctor.
The news of Don Jr.’s ignorant missive led me to recall an article I had written about this very topic, originally published in May 2023:
For MAGA conservatives, women are fair game. Members of the extreme right wing of the conservative movement can pursue and verbally attack women with impunity. In fact, it raises their profile as they become heroes within their authoritarian, paternalistic tribes.
This was demonstrated recently when right-wing TV host John Fredericks lambasted First Lady Jill Biden on several fronts. He publicly accused her of “abandoning” her granddaughter, the daughter of Hunter Biden. However, Jill Biden is not in fact the grandmother. She is, after all, Hunter’s stepmother. Mr. Fredericks then proceeded to indecorously label the first lady as “scum.”
Fredericks further insulted the first lady by asking rhetorically why she wasn’t baking cookies for her granddaughter. Do we as a society ever skewer a working man for “abandoning” his children or grandchildren and not being home to bake cookies? This is the First Lady of the United States we’re talking about—not a woman who has chosen to be a homemaker. Even then the implications are insulting. Jill Biden has her hands full as first lady and as a professor of English and writing at Northern Virginia Community College.
Mr. Fredericks proceeds to shine a bright light on his own astonishing level of ignorance by taunting the first lady over her title and her insistence on being addressed as “Dr. Biden.” He imprudently asks, “You’re a doctor of what?” Fredericks doesn’t appear to have the minimal sophistication that would help him understand that “doctor” is not reserved exclusively for medical doctors. On any college campus in America, he would appear to be rather unrefined and in possession of a childlike innocence about the world around him. Jill Biden, Ed.D, holds a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degrees in both English and education; her doctoral degree is in education. Hence, she is a Doctor of Education. She has every right to expect the courtesy of being addressed accordingly.
No one of the conservative persuasion seems to complain when everyone respectfully addresses a white man with a doctorate as, for example, “Dr. Smith.” But when a woman or an African American or an immigrant demands the same courtesy, all hell breaks loose in the MAGA universe.
