A panel of experts hosted a lively discussion at Allan Hancock College’s first-ever AI Summit on April 18. ??

SANTA MARIA — Allan Hancock College welcomed more than 200 students, educators, industry leaders and community members to its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit on April 18 at the college’s Santa Maria campus.
The event, a first of its kind for the college, brought together experts from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, LinkedIn, Cal Poly, Moorpark College, Berkeley College and Hancock for a day of engaging discussions, keynote presentations, breakout sessions and panel conversations. Topics included AI trends, practical applications, ethical considerations and how artificial intelligence is reshaping education, employment, and everyday life.
“This event is a collaborative space where we can explore the impact of AI in education, industry, and beyond,” said Nancy Jo Ward, a Hancock professor of art and design and one of the summit’s principal organizers.
Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of using new technologies like AI to strengthen fundamental skills.
“College has always been about helping students develop critical thinking skills,” Walthers told the summit’s attendees. “Today, as we talk about these new tools we have, I hope we are also thinking about how to use them to develop those skills.”
Keynote speaker Don Daves-Rougeaux, a senior advisor for workforce development at the Chancellor’s Office, underscored the essential role of AI across all areas of higher education.
“AI is here; it’s in everything we are doing now, and it’s really critical for us to explore the use of AI in our operational areas, our curriculum development, our teaching and learning, our student support and even our infrastructure,” Daves-Rougeaux said.
Student voices also played an important role in the summit. Hancock computer science student and panelist Michael Armstrong shared his perspective on the importance of talking about AI’s impact.
“This event is bringing a really important discussion into the public eye,” said Armstrong. “AI is rapidly evolving our world in a way that many people are not prepared for.”
As part of the summit, students in Hancock’s Media Arts Club created an AI Art pop up gallery in the foyer of the college’s Fine Arts Complex. The students’ art will be on display through April 25.

CUMBRE DE HANCOCK EXPLORA FUTURO DE INTELIGENCIA ARTIFICIAL (AI)
SANTA MARIA – – Allan Hancock College dio la bienvenida a más de 200 estudiantes, docentes, líderes de la industria y miembros de la comunidad en su primera Cumbre de Inteligencia Artificial (AI Summit), realizada el 18 de abril en el campus de Santa María.
Este evento, el primero en su tipo en la historia del colegio, reunió a expertos de la oficina del canciller de los Colegios Comunitarios de California (California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office), Linkedin, Cal Poly, Moorpark College, Berkeley College y del propio Hancock para un día de presentaciones magistrales, sesiones interactivas, mesas de diálogo y discurso temático. Entre los temas abordados estuvieron las tendencias en IA, aplicaciones prácticas, aspectos éticos y cómo la inteligencia artificial está transformando la educación, el empleo y la vida cotidiana.
“Este evento es un espacio colaborativo donde podemos explorar el impacto de la IA en la educación, la industria y más allá”, comentó Nancy Jo Ward, profesora de arte y diseño en Hancock y una de las principales organizadoras del evento.
El superintendente/presidente de Hancock, el Dr. Kevin G. Walthers, destacó la importancia de aprovechar tecnologías emergentes como la IA para fortalecer habilidades fundamentales.
“El colegio siempre ha tenido como objetivo ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar habilidades de pensamiento crítico,” comentó Walthers ante los asistentes. “Hoy, al hablar de estas nuevas herramientas, también debemos reflexionar sobre cómo usarlas para fomentar esas habilidades.”
El ponente principal, Don Daves-Rougeaux, asesor en desarrollo de fuerza laboral en la oficina del canciller, explicó que la inteligencia artificial ya es parte de todo lo que hacemos en la educación.
“La inteligencia artificial ya está aquí; está presente en todo lo que hacemos hoy en día, y es fundamental que exploremos su uso en nuestras operaciones, desde cómo enseñamos, cómo apoyamos a los estudiantes, hasta cómo organizamos nuestro trabajo”, comentó Daves-Rougeaux.
Las voces estudiantiles también tuvieron un papel importante en la cumbre. Michael Armstrong, estudiante de ciencias computacionales en Hancock y panelista, compartió su perspectiva sobre la importancia del dialogo acerca del impacto de la IA.
Este evento está llevando una discusión muy importante al ojo público,” comentó Armstrong. “La inteligencia artificial está transformando rápidamente nuestro mundo de una manera para la que muchas personas aún no están preparadas.”
Como parte de la cumbre, estudiantes del Media Arts Club de Hancock crearon una galería emergente de arte con IA en el vestíbulo del Complejo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Complex) del colegio. Las obras estarán en exhibición hasta el 25 de abril.
