Dear Friend,This year sees People’s Self-Help Housing celebrate its 55th Anniversary!
Since 1970, when a group of committed individuals said ‘we can do better to help house our neighbors’, we have been doing just that. Originally building through the self-help program – ten families building alongside each other, working on one another’s homes – and then amplifying those efforts through the development of multifamily housing, the DNA of our organization is mutuality and support.
This week, we mourned nationally on the passing of arguably this country’s greatest advocate for the dignity of simply having a roof over one’s head. The personification of compassion, President Jimmy Carter with deep humility and through living his faith, put a face on the unhoused and reminded us of who our neighbor is.
Communities come from the simple concept of living alongside each other. Shared lives in shared spaces. Thank you for sharing in our first fifty-five years. I look forward to being in your company for what next lies ahead.

Sign-up today to compete in the 2025 Builder Games! Teams will go head-to-head in a series of building-related challenges. Their mission? Build the most creative playhouse in the time available. Team entry is $1,000 and includes event tickets, meals, and a whole lot of fun!
Join us on Saturday, January 25, from 11to12:30PM in Nipomo, for a celebratory block party honoring the new homeowners of Summer Holly Lane.
This event marks the culmination of a 16-month journey during which these owner-builders dedicated an impressive 40 hours each week to constructing their own homes. Through perseverance, teamwork, and hard work, they have transformed blueprints into homes and made lasting connections within their new community!

¡Este año People’s Self-Help Housing celebra su 55 aniversario!
Desde 1970, cuando un grupo de personas decididas dijo: “podemos hacer algo mejor para dar un hogar a nuestros vecinos y amigos”, hemos estado haciendo precisamente eso. El ADN de nuestra organización es la reciprocidad y el apoyo: originalmente construyendo a través del programa de autoayuda – diez familias constructoras trabajando a la par en sus casas y en las de sus vecinos – para luego ver esos esfuerzos amplificados a través del desarrollo de viviendas multifamiliares.
Esta semana, la nación se cubrió de luto con el fallecimiento de quien podría decirse fue el mayor defensor de la dignidad de poder contar con un techo donde guarecerse. El presidente Jimmy Carter, compasión personificada que con profunda humildad y viviendo su fe, puso rostro a las personas sin hogar y nos recordó quién es nuestro prójimo.
