OXNARD —The City of Oxnard is pleased to announce the appointment of former Oxnard Assistant Police Chief Eric Sonstegard as its new Assistant City Manager.
Mr. Sonstegard brings with him 26 years of experience with the Oxnard Police Department, where he retired as Assistant Chief of Police in 2022. Following his time in Oxnard, he served as Police Chief for the City of Edgewater, Colorado since May 2022 and he will be stepping down in December to rejoin Oxnard in a key leadership role.
“We’re very pleased Eric is coming back; he knows Oxnard, he knows City Hall, and he’s a proven executive leader,” said City Manager Alexander Nguyen. “Eric will provide strong leadership, clear direction, and an abundance of support for the City.”
Sonstegard made significant contributions during his tenure with the Oxnard Police Department, including the development of a nationally recognized Cultural Proficiency curriculum. He spearheaded Oxnard’s first “Summer at City Hall” program, transformed police training programs, and created the Asset Forfeiture Community Funds Grant program to support initiatives aimed at combating drug abuse and gang activity. He was also instrumental in fostering leadership within the department, improving camaraderie, and enhancing training opportunities for officers.
“It’s an incredible honor to have the opportunity to come back and serve the city that has given me and my family so much over the years,” said Sonstegard. “Alex and his team have done so much great work in the community and I can’t wait to contribute to their future successes.”
Sonstegard, who was born and raised in Ventura County, remained active for years in the community as a former board member of the Oxnard/Port Hueneme Salvation Army Corps and a 20-year member of the Oxnard Sunrise Rotary Club. His return to Oxnard marks a homecoming. “I’ve always said that Oxnard runs through my veins. This city holds a special place in my heart, and I’m truly humbled to have the chance to live and work here once again,” he shared.
As Assistant City Manager, Sonstegard will oversee the City’s Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology departments beginning January 6, 2025.

OXNARD – -La Ciudad de Oxnard se complace en anunciar el nombramiento del ex Subjefe de Policía de Oxnard, Eric Sonstegard, como el nuevo Subadministrador de la Ciudad.
El Sr. Sonstegard trae consigo 26 años de experiencia en el Departamento de Policía de Oxnard, donde se retiró como Subjefe de Policía en 2022. Después de su estancia en Oxnard, se desempeñó como Jefe de Policía de la Ciudad de Edgewater, Colorado desde mayo de 2022 y dejará su cargo en diciembre para unirse a Oxnard en un papel de liderazgo clave.
“Estamos muy contentos de que Eric regrese; conoce Oxnard, conoce el ayuntamiento y es un líder ejecutivo comprobado”, dijo el Administrador de la Ciudad Alexander Nguyen. “Eric brindará un liderazgo sólido, una dirección clara y mucho apoyo a la Ciudad”.
Sonstegard hizo contribuciones significativas durante su mandato en el Departamento de Policía de Oxnard, incluido el desarrollo de un plan de estudios de competencia cultural reconocido a nivel nacional. Encabezó el primer programa “Summer at City Hall” de Oxnard, transformó los programas de capacitación policial y creó el programa de Subvenciones de Fondos Comunitarios de Decomisos Activos para apoyar iniciativas destinadas a combatir el abuso de drogas y la actividad de las pandillas. También jugó un papel decisivo en el fomento del liderazgo dentro del departamento, el desarrollo de la camaradería y oportunidades de capacitación para los oficiales.
“Es un honor increíble tener la oportunidad de regresar y servir a la ciudad que tanto nos ha dado a mí y a mi familia a lo largo de los años”, dijo Sonstegard. “Alex y su equipo han hecho un gran trabajo en la comunidad y no puedo esperar para contribuir a sus éxitos futuros”.
Sonstegard, quien nació y creció en el condado de Ventura, permaneció activo durante años en la comunidad como ex miembro de la junta directiva del Cuerpo del Ejército de Salvación de Oxnard/Port Hueneme y miembro durante 20 años del Club Rotario Oxnard Sunrise. Su regreso a Oxnard marca su retorno a casa. “Siempre he dicho que Oxnard corre por mis venas. Esta ciudad ocupa un lugar especial en mi corazón y me siento verdaderamente honrado de tener la oportunidad de vivir y trabajar aquí una vez más”, compartió.
Como subadministrador de la ciudad, Sonstegard supervisará los departamentos de Finanzas, Recursos Humanos y de Tecnología de la Información de la Ciudad a partir del 6 de enero de 2025.
