Adult High School/GED graduation

On Friday evening, June 24, at the Wake Campus auditorium and garden, SBCC School of Extended Learning hosted a triumphant group of 29 adult students celebrating a life-changing milestone. In all, 36 students graduated from the Adult High School, GED and Bilingual GED programs this year. The graduates were welcomed and celebrated by the SBCC and School of Extended Learning leadership team and a full house of proud family and friends, followed by an outdoor dinner and dessert. The ceremony was also available by private Zoom link to the grads, family and friends who could not attend in person.

SBCC Dance Company wins at Red Rock Festival

At the Red Rock Choreography Dance Festival held in early June, four of the 16 works chosen to be performed in the semi-finals were performed by our SBCC Dance Company. Those works were then chosen to move forward to the finals, two of which were choreographed by Artistic Director of the SBCC Dance Company Tracy Kofford: “Linger,” a beautiful duet, and “Cui Bono?” a full company ensemble. There were two awards up for grabs: the Audience Choice Award (which the SBCC Dance Company won in 2019) and the Judges Choice Award. “Linger” won the Judges Choice Award.

Chernor A. Diallo

Chernor Diallo came to Santa Barbara from Lliberia in 2021 to study business administration at SBCC as a first-generation college student. In the Fulani language, the name Chernor means “scholar,” so perhaps he was destined to pursue higher education. Without his dedication and hard work, however, it’s unlikely the opportunities that eventually led him to SBCC would have presented themselves. Read about Chernor’s journey in the Montecito Journal.

Linh Tran

Linh Tran, selected as the Adult High School/GED graduation speaker in June 2022, was also a speaker at the Medical Assistant graduation in April 2022 and has been a long time ESL student. Thus Linh has been part of all three noncredit categories (GED/ESL/Career Skills) leading to a certificate or a diploma. In her graduation speech, she described the road she traveled to accomplish her goals. It was not an easy one. Read Linh’s story.

Fall sports schedules now out

With little more than a month and a half to go before the 2022-23 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) sports calendar officially kicks off, the schedules for the nine SBCC programs that will be competing in the fall have been released. The Vaquero football team gets things started with its Aug. 20 preseason exhibition at Ventura. The following weekend, the regular season officially begins for a number of teams. Don’t miss ‘Something Rotten!’

The Theatre Group at SBCC’s production of this robust and hilarious musical takes you back to Elizabethan England — a time when, according to director Katie Laris, “everyone felt a sense of urgency to achieve, a sense of relief that they’d escaped the plague, a sense of joy and pride to be part of an age of enlightenment and progress.”

Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rockstar, William Shakespeare. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical, “Omelet: The Musical.” The music has a campy, anachronistic vibe and moves from an Elizabethan-inspired sound to contemporary rock. Speaking of music, “Something Rotten” musical director David Potter is celebrating 50 years with SBCC. Thank you, David!

At the Garvin Theatre through July 23.
