March News from People’s Self-Help Housing

eNewsletter | March 2022

Phase 1 of a rehabilitation at our Isla Vista Apartments is complete! Construction consisted of accessibility upgrades, seismic retrofitting, and full replacement of the plumbing, roof, and interior finishes. We are excited to welcome the first group of residents back to their newly renovated homes!
Dear Friend,For over fifty years, the women of People’s have had a profound effect on our organization and in the communities we serve.

Founding Executive Director, Jeanette Duncan was one of the first, and for many years the only female CEO (of any company!) along the Central Coast of California. Reflecting the changing professional landscape of the times, the 1970’s saw her in the vanguard of social change, and trailblazing a path for the hundreds of women she employed, and the thousands of residents she housed. Since her retirement just over a decade ago, those she inspired have in turn mentored and encouraged others, a new generation carrying the standard for equity and social justice.

Every day, her legacy shines through in our work in the increasing numbers of female students attending college, the closing of gender pay gaps both for our residents and our staff, and in the structure of our organization. At People’s women currently account for:

  • 64% of our workforce
  • 55% of our residents
  • 50% of our executive leadership
  • 58% of our governing board

The contributions of women move our mission forward, drive our daily decisions, and inform our strategic planning. In honor of Women’s History Month, I thank each and every one.

Ken Trigueiro, CEO & President

First Affordable Housing in 10 Years for Santa Paula
As the first new affordable housing to break ground in Santa Paula in 10 years, People’s Place will serve families and farmworker households. With construction slated to begin this month, this will be the first new rental construction in Ventura County for PSHH. For more information on this exciting partnership, see our latest press release.
From ‘Home Alone’ to Home Ownership
Having served the local community for decades as a drive-in movie theater, a Central Coast site will now be welcoming owner-builders home. This is first opportunity in 30 years for households to participate in our self-help program in Santa Maria. To get updates about this project, sign-up for our interest list.
Virtual Parent Support Sessions
Thanks to generous funding from Cottage Health, families are now able to access virtual support sessions addressing ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences). Sessions include: identifying common signs, tips to manage trauma, and Q&As with mental health professionals.

These free sessions are open to anyone, with different topics covered each week and the opportunity to win a $50 giftcard.
