Local Artists and Musicians Join Together for Celebration of Social Activism on Oct. 5

Exhibit continues through Nov. 16

CAMARILLO — Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIART), 2222 E. Ventura Blvd., Camarillo, will be hosting “Celebration of Social Activism,” the Social Justice Fund for Ventura County (SJFVC) annual fundraiser, recognition and networking event, Saturday, Oct. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event coincides with the opening reception of Studio Channel Islands’ latest exhibition, “Magical Realism.” This exhibition features the work of three artists; Omar D’Leon, Andrea Yomtob and John Durron.

Magical Realism is most well known as a Latin-American style that is characterized by the matter-of-fact inclusion of fantastic or mythical elements into seemingly realistic fiction. The landscapes in the “Magical Realism” exhibition carry stories of labor, love and loss. Each of the artists weaves tales of personal and social history into their work, using symbols to illustrate moments of significance. The exhibition runs from Oct. 5 to Nov. 16.

Sponsored by The Port of Hueneme Oxnard Harbor District, “Celebration of Social Activism” is open to the community and admission is free. The event will feature the awarding of grants to six local nonprofit organizations that are helping to “improve the plight of vulnerable children in Ventura County” (the 2019 SJFVC theme), a live and silent auction to help with fundraising efforts, food and refreshments and opportunities for artists, musicians, activists and donors to network.

The Social Justice Fund for Ventura County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds for grants for local activists working for a more equitable and fair community.
