Student wins Santa Barbara Film Festival award

On the closing night of the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Santiago Bailey-Musacchio, an SBCC dual enrollment student who is also a sophmore at Santa Barbara High School, was announced as the winner of the high school filmmaking award for his film “Object Permanence,” which he wrote, directed and edited.  Read more about his project, what inspired him, his biggest challenges, etc…

Rave reviews for SBCC’s Lunch Break Big Band at SOhO

On Feb. 11, SBCC’s Lunch Break Big Band took the stage at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club downtown to an enthusiastic audience. According to the review in The Channels, “The Lunch Break Big Band perfectly embodies the spirit of jazz. With unplanned solos, fun stage banter and overall spontaneity of the musicians, the band is in top playing shape and is sure to not disappoint.” You can catch their next performance at SOhO on March 18. NASA selects SBCC students for summer onsite experience

2019 is shaping up to be a great year for young women at SBCC who are interested in space exploration. NASA has selected seven SBCC students to travel to various NASA centers this summer to participate in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) onsite experience. Once there, students will intereact with engineers, develop a prototype rover and learn about careers in science and engineering. Those selected include one student from the STEM Transfer Program, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and six students in the MESA program (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement). We look forward to hearing about their experiences upon their return!

Students awarded International Study Abroad Scholarships

ACCENT International has selected SBCC students Jessica Nichol and Rachael Sincavage as the winners of the Spring 2019 Community College Study Abroad Scholarship. SBCC Alumnus on track to achieve his dream

Gabriel Witt was a first generation college student when he began his academic career at SBCC and then transferred to Cal Poly. While earning his B.S. degree in Kinesiology, he went to Uganda where he started a physical therapy clinic and obtained a grant to fund the clinic and establish an insurance program for approximately 600 patients.

Luria Library displays amazing ice age fossils
Long, long ago in the region where we now live, there roamed Columbian mammoths, cave bears, dire wolves, saber-tooth cats and giant sloths. Fossils of these “Pleistocene Megafauna” are on display in the Luria Library, where they should be seen up close in order to get a sense of how enormous they were. Consider the sloth: Today’s sloths average 24″ to 31″ long and weigh between 8 to 17 pounds. Its ice-age ancestor (whose femur is on display) was approximately 10 feet tall and weighed an estimated 2,200 pounds!

First Food Share of Spring 2019

There was an abundance of sunshine, good food and smiling faces when the SBCC Food Pantry held its first Food Share of Spring 2019 on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the West Campus Lawn. Hundreds of students stocked up on fresh produce such as lettuces, peppers, onions, oranges, pears, broccoli and potatoes. Canned beans and corn, cereals, pasta and other items were also available.

Dr. Melissa V. Moreno selected as Vice President of School of Extended Learning

Effective Feb. 1, Dr. Melissa Moreno assumed the role of Vice President of the School of Extended Learning, after having served as Interim Vice President since June 2017. The School of Extended Learning includes all of the district’s noncredit and fee-based programs, contract education, several off-campus programs and the Cosmetology Academy.
