In the aftermath of the 2017 Thomas Fire, Luther Gerlach turned his camera on the destruction and regeneration spanning Ventura county, using chemical elements gathered from the landscape to bring the power of these natural forces to life.
This work re-frames traditional landscape imagery. Mischieviously beautiful, the paintings are made of asphalt emulsion, tar, wax, shellac, and powdered mineral pigments on canvas. They are dirty, seductive, and imperfect.
