OXNARD — After 42 years of dedicated service in education, Ms. Robin Freeman, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at the Oxnard School District, will retire on June 29, 2018. Ms. Freeman has served as the Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services and Chief Academic Officer since July 1, 2015.
“I love this job. I could go another 20 years, because I am a life-long learner,” Freeman said when asked about her plan to retire. ”I love teaching and I have never regretted going into teaching.”
Ms. Freeman started her teaching career in Maywood, Illinois at the Proviso Township High School District after graduating from the University of Illinois. She later moved to Georgia to teach in Fulton County schools. After almost three years, Ms. Freeman relocated to California to begin teaching for the Hueneme Elementary School District. She was at that school district for 30 years as a teacher, Assistant Principal, a Principal, Senior Director, Assistant Superintendent, Special Programs and Assistant Superintendent Educational Services before leaving to serve as the Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services for the Santa Paula Unified School District for four years.
During Ms. Freeman’s years in education, she has seen many changes in education and has experienced a few milestones herself. She was selected Administrator of the Year in 2010 by the Association of California School Administrators and Ms. Freeman visited the White House to accept a National Blue Ribbon School award on behalf of Blackstock Junior High School where she was the Principal.
Dr. Cesar Morales, Superintendent of the Oxnard School District, said Ms. Freeman’s technical expertise, experience, and wisdom were valuable on a daily basis as they worked on improving the district’s instructional program and wrap-around support services for students and parents.
“Ms. Freeman made incredible contributions to the Oxnard School District while inspiring leaders, educators and staff to be responsive to our students.”
A resident of Oxnard, Ms. Freeman shared that she is planning to remain in the community after she retires. Her plans are to travel more and to increase her involvement in the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
“I see a lot of needs,” she said. “I want to do equity work surrounding cultural proficiency. I am also passionate about kids learning to read.”
