Dave Loveton: Everyday Hero Santa Barbara City College paid tribute to one of our own when Sports Information Specialist Dave Loveton was presented with an “Everyday Hero” award as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer night. The crowd gave a standing ovation to Loveton who was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer. Loveton is in charge of the award-winning Vaqueros athletic website as well as the public address announcer at SBCC sporting events. See the KEYT story…

Sustainability Committee Unveils Renewable Energy Powered Phone Charging Station Never again will you have to choose between being outside in the fresh air or charging your phone, at least not while you’re at City College. The Associated Student Government’s Sustainability Committee created a solar and wind powered device on West Campus that allows you to charge your phone while you enjoy the outdoors. Read more…

SBCC Faculty Lecture: “Crime Across the Curriculum” Professor Ann Redding, known for her enthusiasm and humor in the classroom, will present the 39th Annual Faculty Lecture on March 21 in the Garvin Theatre. The public are invited to attend what promises to be a riveting journey through time, pop culture and the judicial system. Professor Redding believes “Stories about crime are human storytelling at the most basic level; they show us the worst—and the best – of what humans can be.” Read more…

Time Traveling Comedy/Thriller at the Garvin Theatre Through March 17 Don’t miss your chance to see SBCC’s comedic thriller about two women who move through time to try and stop a murder from occurring. Communicating Doors, written by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn, provides laughs, suspense, and according to director Katie Laris, a lot of heart, courage and kindness. Read more…

Parenting Classes Offered at the School of Extended Learning in March The Parenting program in the School of Extended Learning offers tuition-free classes for parents and their children. Faculty Colloquium to Feature Dr. Michael Shermer March 19 Join us at the Garvin Theatre on March 19, 6:30 p.m., when New York Times best selling author, Dr. Michael Shermer, will  present his new work, Heavens on Earth, followed by a book signing. Noncredit ESL: Celebrating 100 Years through Personal Stories Proud to celebrate 100 years of noncredit education in our community, the SBCC School of Extended Learning celebrates the instructors and staff who provide quality and needed education to adults in our community.Click here to read the story of ESL instructor, Angelina Valenzuela and her grandmother — who in 1955 enrolled in the ESL citizenship class we still offer to this day.

Important Dates in March The week of March 26 – 31 is Spring Break. No classes will be held (including School of Extending Learning classes), although offices at all three campuses (Main Campus, Schott Campus and Wake Campus) will remain open.

SBCC Board of Trustees Meetings – March 8 and 22 The SBCC Board of Trustees will meet at 4 p.m. in CC-223 at SBCC on March 8 and in A-211 on March 22. The Agendas for Board Meetings can be found at least 72 hours prior to the meeting on the Board webpage.
