Mariachi Sol de México de Jose Hernandez to perform in free concerts Feb. 8-10 in Santa Barbara region

Mariachi Sol de México de Jose Hernandez will perform in a series of free family concerts and school outreach programs Feb. 8 through 10 in the Santa Barbara region, ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! reported in a media release.

The 12-member band will play at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at Isla Vista School, 6875 El Colegio Road, Isla Vista, (805) 893-5037; and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Guadalupe City Hall 918 Obispo St., Guadalupe, (805) 343-2939; and at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Marjorie Luke Theatre at Santa Barbara Jr. High, 721 E. Cota St., Santa Barbara (805) 884-4087, ext. 7.

Sol de México will also join the community in a mariachi mass form 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church 227 Nopal St., Santa Barbara. The group will also participate in various school workshops Feb. 7 and 8 in the Santa Barbara region.

With a family tree of five-generations of mariachi musicians that hail from La Sierra del Tigre region of Jalisco, México, Jose Hernandez is one of the leaders in bringing the music to new audiences in the U.S. and developing programs for educating future musicians, ¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! reported.

Founded in 1981 in Los Angeles, Mariachi Sol de México has performed for sold out audiences in concert halls worldwide from Lincoln Center in New York,  to Viña del Mar, Santiago Chile, to Beijing and Poyngyang in South Korea. They have performed for four presidents including special concerts at the White House.  Sol de México have performed with the great vocalists Vicente Fernandez, Selena, Jose Feliciano and Luis Miguel – and have created unexpected collaborations with singers such as Willie Nelson, the Beach Boys, and Lady Gaga.
