In 2020, students have endured so many challenges — the pandemic, unemployment, loneliness, mental-health issues, and political and social turmoil. So this year, Communications Professor Dr. Donte Newman asked his students to write about their experiences on issues ranging from family members to politics. According to Dr. Newman, “they wrote confidently, clearly and compellingly.” Three of the essays, products of an assignment titled “From My Standpoint,” were recently published in the S.B. Independent. Read the essays here…

Abigail Armen presents Sigma Chi Eta top student paper

At the recent national meeting for the Sigma Chi Eta Communication Honor Society — held remotely as a part of this year’s National Communication Association convention — Abigail Armen, last year’s SBCC chapter president, presented the top student paper. Her topic described how mental illness in parents can affect a child’s ability to solve conflict later in life. Her research highlighted the need to address how early life trauma can affect one’s ability to communicate effectively.

Theatre Arts department performs amazing production of Sophocles’ classic play “Antigone”

“Antigone” is an ancient Greek tragedy that tells the story of King Creon who has forbidden his subjects from properly honoring the dead body of one of his enemies. Antigone, the sister of the king’s enemy, disobeys the king, gives her brother a respectful burial and pays the consequences. In an extraordinary creative twist, SBCC’s Theatre Arts Department presented this student showcase online in the format of a graphic novel. Read The Channels review of how this performance demonstrated that the timeless tale maintains its relevance now more than ever using new technologies.

Another SBCC Music “World’s First” event

SBCC Music just keeps making history. The Santa Barbara City College Lunch Break Big Band joined forces with the Jamulus Storband of Sweden for a live concert of big band jazz on Nov. 22. This wasn’t prerecorded music presented in sterile video. The music was played live from members’ individual homes and streamed in real-time. Two big bands, two continents, swingin’! If you missed the live event, you can watch the recording here…
Given the recent trend in COVID-19 spread in California (and in Santa Barbara County), it is highly likely that we will continue to be in the Purple Tier when the Spring term starts in January. Keeping health and safety in mind and in order to promote orderly planning of classes, it has been determined that it will be best to start the first two weeks of instruction in remote modality except for Career Technical Education (CTE) programs that serve the Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce, as delineated by Governor Newsom’s Guidance on Essential Workforce related to Executive Order N-33-20 issued on March 19, 2020. Communication Dept. receives NCA grant for special service project

Recently, the Communication Department applied for and received the first grant to be given through the National Communication Association’s (NCA) new program for Sigma Chi Eta service projects. (Sigma Chi Eta is the official community college honor society of the NCA.) The project, called SBCC Storytime, is in collaboration with SBCC’s Luria Library and the Single Parents Arriving Ready for College (SPARC) program. Sigma Chi Eta students, SBCC faculty and public speaking students from the SBCC Communication Department will be recording culturally-inclusive children’s stories that children will be able to access on Youtube via a link on the SBCC library website.

According to Communication Department Chair Sarah Hock, “We are still putting many of the logistics together now but we are looking forward to continuing our Alpha Beta chapter history of community service, even in this remote environment.”

Further updates will be reported here in The Bridge, as information becomes available.
