SANTA BARBARA — SBCC School of Extended Learning invites the community to explore a model of self-care and resilience based on mindfulness, that has been presented to frontline workers in emergency response, health care, aging and education. Radhule Weininger, MD, Ph.D. and Michael Kearney, MD will deliver the Fall Mind and Supermind lecture, Monday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. at SBCC School of Extended Learning Schott Campus Auditorium.

“The presentation will be an opportunity to become informed about and learn practices that can build emotional resilience and mitigate stress syndromes such as moral distress, compassion fatigue, and burnout,” said Kearney.

That we live in uncertain times – socially, politically, environmentally – is beyond question. How can we stay awake and present to this without feeling overwhelmed or becoming burnt out? In this talk, Radhule Weininger, MD, Ph.D., and Michael Kearney, MD will discuss a model of self-care and resilience based on mindfulness, self-compassion, and nature connection that they have presented to health care workers, university and high school students, educators, firefighters, and elderly individuals living in skilled nursing facilities.

Kearney also offers this example of something we can all do to build resilience, “‘‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ is a common but unrecognized problem when we spend more time in front of screens that we do in forests. We can build resilience by going outside, finding a spot where we can pause, and mindfully soaking in the sights and sounds and smells of nature.”

“As a community on the long path of recovery from tragedy and disaster, resilience is a vital subject,” said Andy Harper, SBCC School of Extended Learning Interim Dean. “We invite the community to explore with Radhule and Michael why mindfulness is in the spotlight of psychology and spirituality; and what we can learn from practices being adopted by high-stress professions.”

For more than 35 years, Mind and Supermind has connected the Santa Barbara community with acclaimed experts around cutting-edge topics of global consequence. Dr. Spencer Sherman will be the evening’s moderator.
