National Nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace Announces new Santa Barbara Chapter

SANTA BARBARA

WHO
Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to building and delivering bunk beds to children in need.

WHAT
Across the US, too many kids go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors, causing adverse effects on their physical and mental health. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to finding those children who are sleeping on the floor or otherwise unwanted conditions, and delivering hand-built bunk beds free of charge. Now, thanks to a group of dedicated colleagues working for a local mattress and bedding company, Santa Barbara has officially been added to the list of over 200 national chapters directly serving their communities.

“Growing up in Northern California town with great economic disparity, I knew plenty of classmates who had to sleep on futons, floors, or even share with their parents,” says chapter Co-President Amanda Tempest. “Now that I’m in the sleep industry and have truly learned the impact of a good night’s sleep, starting a local chapter of this organization to help kids in Santa Barbara county seemed like a no-brainer.”

The Santa Barbara chapter of SHP is currently in fundraising phase, seeking funds for needed tools and storage. In-kind donations are also welcome including new, unused bedding (twin size comforters and pillows), lumber, storage unit, or travel trailer.

BACKGROUND
SHP is a non-profit organization that builds and delivers bunk beds for needy children. Since our start in 2012, we have been able to help community groups build and deliver thousands of beds for children across the U.S. — nearly 14,000 already this year alone! SHP hopes to continue our quest to see that “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town” and can only accomplish this by the donations of time, money, and materials received from individuals and local companies in the neighborhoods we serve.
