Museum of Ventura County — Step back in time with “California Cool” Virtual Tour, and more!

Hi there! We thought maybe you’d like to hear from some other members of the MVC team, so this week we bring you Denise Sindelar, the Museum’s Deputy Director. Denise has been at the Museum since December of 2017 but has been a fixture in the regional cultural scene for decades. She ran her own independent gallery in Downtown Ventura in the 1990s and 2000s, served on the city’s Public Art Commission, and last year was elected Arts Leader of the Year by Ventura’s Mayor Matt LaVere. Without further ado, here is Denise…

From the Deputy Director of the Museum of Ventura County
So, how is everyone doing on day 28 of the State of California’s shelter in place order? I have to say that this has been a long 4 weeks of quarantine for me, my husband and our two dogs. That said, I have found it incredibly rewarding to be able to get to things that have been on my to-do list for quite a while. Catching up on my reading, writing cards, working in the garden, taking time to talk on the phone with friends and family, cooking and even taking the occasional nap. ?
Each week our team here at the Museum has been working to create new content for you to explore and enjoy. This week we bring you:
  • A virtual tour of the California Cool – Midcentury Modernism on the Central Coastexhibit
  • An opportunity to contribute online submissions of YOUR experiences, images and reflections about the COVID-19 pandemic
  • The 2019 Year In Review – a report of MVC’s exhibition, education, and event programming for 2019
In developing online content out of a rushed necessity to stay in touch with the needs of our community, we have realized that virtual/digital content has become an integral part of the Museum’s “new normal.” We look forward to seeing you in person when our doors reopen, but in the meantime, we would love to hear from you. Please send me an email to dsindelar@venturamuseum.org just to say hi and tell me how you are going. We all miss you and wish you well.

VIRTUAL TOUR
If you missed
California Cool: Mid-century Modernism on the Central Coast
at the Museum of Ventura County, then we invite you to step back in time to a cooler and more sophisticated era of design with this in-depth virtual tour of two popular portions of the exhibit. California Cool explored the popular design movement in interior & graphic design, architecture, and urban development from 1945 to 1965.
COLLECTING HISTORY TODAY
As Ventura County residents react to new policies and recommendations aimed to restrict the virus’ spread, the Museum is working to document and preserve the materials and stories that demonstrate how our county is continuing to communicate, work, commute, learn, teach, create, pray, celebrate, mourn, and give aid to others.
Tell us your story or consider what objects or recordings best represent the experiences and observations that have stood out to you most. How are you and your family members spending your time? What do you regard as your biggest challenges? Was there a moment when you realized a historic event was taking place?
The stories and materials we collect will allow all of us to study and share these experiences in the future.
2019 YEAR IN REVIEW
Thanks in great part to you and your support, this report shares a lot of good news about 2019 and exciting ideas for the future. With your help, MVC has been able to make significant progress toward long-term financial sustainability, strong governance, and community relevance.
When the final copies of the report were delivered to us in mid-March, we debated whether to send them out because promoting our positivity during these uncertain times seems, in some ways, inappropriate.
But we decided to move forward and share this celebration of MVC’s past year with you. We determined that not only can we all use a little good news, but that this good news is timely because MVC’s success is the direct result of people, including you, coming together to support the Museum. You are the reason the Museum has this good news to share. I hope that as you read through the positive achievements of last year, you will see yourselves in all of them. Without your support, what you read in this report would not have been possible.
And when we are able and encouraged to be together again, we look forward to continuing to serve as a place of celebration and inclusivity.

Inspiration and Influence:
Sculptor Duane Dammeyer and Painter Rima Muna
at the Santa Paula Art Museum
Ventura stone sculptor Duane Dammeyer and Ventura abstract painter Rima Muna hope their exhibition Inspiration and Influence at the Santa Paula Art Museum serves others as a space for reflection and renewal in what can be a very busy world.
While Dammeyer and Muna are two very different artists, they have one thing in common: both are eager and open to finding inspiration anywhere, including in each other.
