“I want people to recognize that the ocean isn’t just a victim of climate change – it is our solution. If our oceans die – and they are dying – we will die with them. Life on Earth is not possible without a living ocean.” – Cristina Mittermeier
SANTA BARBARA — UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Cristina Mittermeier on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Hall. National Geographic photographer Cristina Mittermeier has dedicated her life to safeguarding the world’s oceans and inspiring millions to do the same. With a degree in biochemical engineering and marine sciences and training in fine art photography, she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers to drive conservation efforts through storytelling. She co-founded SeaLegacy, a nonprofit that works at the intersection of art, science and conservation to rewild the ocean for the benefit of biodiversity, humanity and climate stability. Born in Mexico, Mittermeier spends half the year living in Canada and the other half at sea aboard her research catamaran SeaLegacy. Join Mittermeier as she shares images and stories from her travels and explores how inextricably linked we are to that most sacred element – water.
Mittermeier will present an Arts Adventure for Santa Barbara County schoolchildren earlier in the day at the Arlington Theatre.

ABOUT CRISTINA MITTERMEIER
Born in Mexico City, Cristina Mittermeier has been a passionate advocate for our natural world since her graduation from the University of Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering and Marine Sciences. After several years of field work, Mittermeier noticed that what moved people the most were the stories about what she and her fellow researchers were studying – not the actual studies. Determined to harness this magic, Mittermeier enrolled in the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C., and began her journey as wildlife photographer. In 2005 she formed a collective called the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) to magnify and showcase their impact.
In 2014, Mittermeier co-founded, along with her partner Paul Nicklen, SeaLegacy, a revolutionary non-pro?t organization dedicated to the protection of the ocean. SeaLegacy harnesses the power of storytelling to raise awareness of critical marine issues and to drive advocacy through various media channels. By building its own pipeline of storytellers, stitching together their unique social media audiences and enabling straightforward funding pathways for committed corporate, institutional and individual partners, SeaLegacy is able to document the natural world constantly.
In 2020, on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Mittermeier announced the most ambitious project of her career: “Only One,” a new digital technology product that amplifies stories, campaigns and solutions that sit at the intersection of ocean health and social justice, and uses the power of media and technology to inspire individuals to take action to rebuild ocean life. A Sony Artisan of Imagery, Cristina was named one of National Geographic‘s Adventurers of the Year in 2018. She is also the recipient of many awards, including the Mission Award from the North American Nature Photography Association and the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year Award. In recognition of her three decades of courageous photojournalism, Mittermeier was recently presented with the Seattle Aquarium Sylvia Earle Medal and is the recipient of Travel + Leisure‘s Global Vision Award for 2021.
