VENTURA — The community is invited to listen as author Dr. Kathleen Contreras reads from her new bilingual book, Harvesting Friends/Cosechando Amigos when she visits the Downtown Ventura Farmers’ Market held on East Santa Clara & Palm Streets on Saturday, July 21. Contreras will provide three bilingual readings at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Harvesting Friends/ Cosechando Amigos is a story about a garden that grows fresh vegetables in addition to friendships. The book introduces young Lupe and her new friend Antonio to the readers as they meet in an unexpected way and grow their friendship to include their neighbors and friends of all ages. Farmers’ market produce is a main component in the new book, and recipes will be highlighted. Books will be available for purchase for $15 and can be signed by the author.

About Dr. Kathleen Contreras: Dr. Kathleen Contreras is a bilingual teacher educator teaching at California State University, Channel Islands in the School of Education and the Chicano Studies Department. She earned her B.A. and bilingual teaching credential at UCLA, a Master’s in Bilingual Education at UCSB, and a PhD in Urban Schooling & Teacher Education from UCLA. Her career in teacher education is dedicated to aspiring future bilingual educators. Kathleen is the author of four books for children, including Pan Dulce (Scholastic, Inc.); Braids/Trencitas (Lectorum); Sweet Memories/Dulces Recuerdos (Lectorum), and Harvesting Friends/Cosechando Amigos (Arte Público Press).
