Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Trump, serves as a co-chair of the National Council for the American Worker. Several weeks ago, I, like many others, waxed skeptical of Ivanka’s suggestion that Americans laid off from their jobs “find something new” as they are displaced from their livelihoods by the tsunami-strength ravages of the coronavirus pandemic. She was roundly criticized for being the let-them-eat-cake embodiment of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the French Revolution, who was ultimately executed at the guillotine.
I don’t recommend any such thing for Ivanka, though she may indeed seem to be oblivious to the struggles of ordinary folks, just as Marie Antoinette was. Ivanka, this daughter of a billionaire (or so we’re led to believe), probably can’t even begin to understand the lives of Americans who will never even begin to approach the stratospheric privileges and opportunities that she has experienced throughout her luxurious life. I think she tries, but it’s like asking me to imagine the life of a professional football player, or that of a politician, or a singer. I simply can’t relate to any of them.
Out of sheer curiosity, I went to the web site FindSomethingNew.org, the resource promoted by Ivanka, and poked around. No, this site isn’t for everyone. It’s not for the workers who are scrambling to obtain unemployment benefits until the pandemic, someday, begins to dissipate. It’s not for those who have difficulty with online learning, because that’s about the only path to many new careers right now. It’s not for the service workers who believe that someday soon they’ll be “back in the saddle.”
But as I continued looking at the site, I found myself drawn into the possibilities of new directions and purpose. If I were younger and idled, I would spend some time exploring this site and all of its features. Not all the retraining that this site offers requires money upfront, which is a very real obstacle for someone struggling to keep body and soul together. Anyone who knows their way around the Internet, is worried about their future and finds themselves with time on their hands might want to take the assessments. This would enable them to gain some insights into their skills and resources and begin to imagine the possibilities of a new, exciting future that may not have been even a blip on their radar screens until now.
Sometimes the greatest adversities crush our spirits. Misfortune is capable of dooming us to stagnancy and boredom. However, it can also open doors to opportunities that otherwise would have remained sealed.
Maybe Ivanka’s idea is worth exploring.

El “Búscate Algo Nuevo” de Ivanka

Ivanka Trump, hija del Presidente Trump, sirve como copresidenta del National Council for the American Worker (Consejo Nacional Para el Trabajador Americano). Hace varias semanas, yo, como muchos otros, me volví escéptico ante la sugerencia de Ivanka de que los estadounidenses despedidos de sus empleos “encuentren algo nuevo”, ya que son desplazados de su sustento debido a los poderosos estragos de la pandemia que estamos sufriendo. Ella fue duramente criticada por ser la encarnación de María Antonieta, la última reina de Francia antes de la Revolución Francesa, quien finalmente fue ejecutada en la guillotina.
No recomiendo nada parecido para Ivanka, a pesar de que parezca ajena a las luchas de la gente común, tal como lo fue María Antonieta. Ivanka, esta hija de un multimillonario (o así nos han hecho creer) probablemente ni siquiera pueda comenzar a comprender la vida de los estadounidenses que ni siquiera comenzará a aproximarse a los estratosféricos privilegios y oportunidades que ella ha experimentado a lo largo de su suntuosa vida. Creo que ella lo intenta, pero es como pedirme a mí que me imagine la vida de un jugador de fútbol profesional, o la de un político o de un cantante. Simplemente no puedo relacionarme con ninguno de ellos.
Por pura curiosidad, fui al sitio web FindSomethingNew.org, el recurso promocionado por Ivanka, para husmear. No, este sitio no es para todos. No es para los trabajadores despedidos que luchan por obtener los pagos de desempleo hasta que la pandemia, algún día, comience a disiparse. No es para aquellos que tienen dificultad con el aprendizaje en línea, porque ese es el único camino para muchas carreras nuevas en este momento. No es para los trabajadores en los servicios esenciales que creen que algún día pronto estarán “de regreso al jale”.
Pero mientras seguía investigando el sitio, me encontré atraído por las posibilidades de nuevos rumbos y propósitos. Si yo fuera más joven e inactivo, pasaría algún tiempo explorando este sitio y todos sus aspectos. No todo el entrenamiento que este sitio ofrece requiere dinero por adelantado, lo cual es un obstáculo muy real para alguien que lucha por mantener juntos el cuerpo y alma. Cualquiera que esté preocupado por su futuro, que conozca el Internet y que se encuentre con tiempo entre manos debe pensar en tomar las evaluaciones. Esto les daría la oportunidad de obtener algunas ideas sobre sus habilidades y recursos, y comenzar a imaginar las posibilidades de un futuro nuevo y emocionante que antes no había soñado.
A veces, las mayores adversidades aplastan nuestro espíritu. La mala fortuna es capaz de condenarnos al estancamiento y aburrimiento. Pero también pueden abrir puertas a oportunidades que de otro modo hubieran permanecido selladas para siempre.
Quizás vale la pena explorar la idea de Ivanka.
