Dear Ventura County Community Members,
(April 20), in Minneapolis a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty of all three counts for the murder of George Floyd. Our hearts go out to George Floyd’s family and to the families and communities across our country who have experienced racial injustice and horrific violence. Today, justice was served. There cannot be healing without justice and there is still much work to do to create true justice that prevents senseless killings.
Today’s decision does not minimize the pain or solve issues of hate, but it can mark the beginning of community healing and real change across our nation. Police brutality cannot be tolerated. I appreciate our local partnership with law enforcement and the leadership of our Sheriff and District Attorney in their commitment to racial justice. This tragic incident underscores the need for law enforcement to continue to be a partner in the community. Now more than ever is a time to come together to listen, communicate and engage in order for us to move toward an equitable society. We must address the unacceptable continued violence and hate toward people of color and commit to using our individual and collective voices to end the divisiveness of racial injustice.
We know that there is much work ahead. Black, indigenous and people of color still live with fear that what should be routine or minor police encounters could end tragically.
We value our relationships with our community members and community groups. We are stronger together. We stand in solidarity with those who wish to ensure all have a sense of safety, belonging, justice, equity and peace.
We must do our part by continuing to encourage ongoing discussions around topics of race, and the longstanding history of racism in our country, to break down the barriers that separate us, no matter how uncomfortable these topics may be. I hope that today is a true turning point in our country where people who have seen this trauma over and over again will know it is possible to have equal protection under the law and that we can all work together to assure that these tragedies stop. Our criminal justice system must provide equal treatment for all people. We owe it to all those whose lives have been lost to do all we can to stand together against hate and make a lasting impact for generations to come.

Hoy, en Minneapolis, un jurado declaró a Derek Chauvin culpable de los tres cargos por el asesinato de George Floyd. Nuestro sentido pésame están con la familia de George Floyd y con las familias y comunidades de nuestro país que enfrentan injusticia racial y violencia terrible. Hoy se realizo la justicia. No puede haber cura sin justicia y todavía queda mucho trabajo por hacer para crear justicia verdadera que evite asesinatos inconcientes.
La decision de hoy no minimiza el dolor ni resuelve los asuntos del odio, pero marca el comienzo de la sanación comunitaria y un cambio verdadero en nuestro país. Agradezco nuestra asociación local con las fuerzas del orden y el liderazgo de nuestro alguacil y fiscal de distrito en sus compromisos a la justicia racial. Este trágico incidente subraya la necesidad de que las fuerzas del orden continúen siendo socios en la comunidad. Ahora mas que nunca es momento de unirnos para escuchar, comunicar, y participar para avanzar hacia una sociedad equitativa. Debemos enfrentar a la inaceptable violencia continua y el odio hacia las personas de color y comprometernos a usar nuestras voces individuales y colectivas para poner fin a la división que trae la injusticia racial.
Sabemos que hay mucho trabajo por delante. Las personas negras, indígenas y de color aún viven con el temor de que lo que debería ser un encuentro policial de rutina pueda terminar trágicamente.
Valoramos a las relaciones con nuestra comunidad y los grupos comunitarios. Juntos somos mas fuertes. Estamos en solidaridad con quienes desean garantizar que todos tengan un sentido de seguridad, pertenencia, justicia, equidad y paz.
Debemos hacer nuestra parte continuando animar las discusiones sobre temas de raza, y la larga historia de racismo en nuestro país, para derribar las barreras que nos separan, sin importar lo incómodo que sean estos temas. Espero que hoy sea un verdadero punto de inflexión en nuestro país donde las personas que han visto este trauma una y otra vez sepan que es posible tener la misma protección ante la ley y que todos podemos trabajar juntos para asegurar que estas tragedias no sucedan. Nuestro sistema de justicia penal debe brindar un trato igual a todas las personas. Le debemos a todos aquellos que han perdido sus vidas por hacer todo lo posible para luchar juntos contra el odio y lograr un impacto duradero para las generaciones futuras.
