Friend,The recent passage of the federal budget reconciliation bill challenged many, to include us an organization and we as individuals who work in the community, with conflicting and raw emotions.

As developers of affordable housing, we welcomed the improvements to the strongly bipartisan supported Low-Income Housing and New Markets tax credit programs. However, the deep cuts that ran rough shod over lower-income earning households, and devaluing approach to removing supports for the most vulnerable who we serve, saddened us. The dismantlement of food, health and safety programs and policies which directly affect those we serve, left many devasted families in its wake.

The broadcaster, humanitarian and good neighbor Fred Rogers always encouraged those who found themselves in fearful times to “look for the helpers”. At People’s Self-Help Housing, ‘help’ is in our name and when our ability to help is diminished in one way, it spurs us on to redouble our efforts in others. We will use changes in legislation to help bring more affordable housing to the region, and when personal hardships emerge for our residents, we will respond with empathetic and compassionate solutions.

There has always been, and will continue to be good, and good people in our communities. I encourage everyone to recognize the hope and resilience in our neighbors, and to help whatever and wherever need is encountered.

undefinedResident Success Story: A Mother’s Strength and a Community’s Support
Earlier this month, a single mother of two walked into her property’s office with quiet urgency. Facing an unexpected shoulder surgery, she was worried about how she would provide for her children while she recovered.

Through her PSHH Social Worker, she was connected with food assistance and received $500 from the Resident Assistance Fund to help cover groceries. Days later, she returned with tears of gratitude. Because of this support, her children had meals and she had the peace of mind to heal.

A Sanctuary During Instability: Camino Scholars
This summer, with uncertainty and fear present for many on the Central Coast, Camino Scholars has become more than an educational program.

Our social workers, property managers, and educators have stepped up as protectors and advocates, creating a safe place where children find comfort and stability.

Your support is urgently needed to keep these doors open and ensure that every child has access to trusted adults, creative outlets, and the essentials that make each day full of opportunity. Please donate today to help Camino Scholars continue to uplift our communities.

Building Your Housing Vocabulary
What is Area Median Income (AMI)? This term refers to the midpoint of a region’s income range: half of the households earn more and half earn less. It is updated each year by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and helps determine eligibility for affordable housing programs.

AMI plays a key role in setting income limits for housing assistance. Want to find out your AMI? Click here and enter your address.

55 Years of Impact: Responding to a Global Pandemic
Along with the rest of the world, the global pandemic saw PSHH innovating in many ways. One of those was participation in Project Homekey which saw the rehabbing of motels and conversion into studio apartments.

This has allowed for thousands of units of housing to be created throughout the state. Now named Project Homekey+, we continue to develop through this program and look to more ways of using empty commercial real estate for housing needs.
