Millions of Americans have come to depend on credentialed online pharmacies outside the U.S. for their prescription medications. These pharmacies have strict guidelines. They will sell only to adults who are able to produce a legitimate doctor’s prescription for a particular drug or medication. Quality control of their products is of utmost importance. Quantity limits are imposed.
For the struggling masses of Americans who would normally be unable to afford highly inflated prices for these vital pharmaceuticals, these online vendors based in Canada and other countries are a godsend. They offer a legitimate service that allows untold numbers of people to purchase lawful, medically prescribed drugs for a considerably discounted price. People shouldn’t be forced to decide which they can afford to pay in a particular month: food, rent, heat, or prescription medications.
But these discount pharmaceutical providers are under severe threat. The DRUGS Act (Domain Reform for Unlawful Drug Sellers Act, H.R.6352 & S.3399) is an attempt to block Americans’ access to dangerous, illicit drugs, which on its face is commendable. The problem is that the legitimate online pharmacies are caught up in the legislation. The bill has been introduced to the House of Representatives.
The DRUGS Act purports to wage a war on illegal drugs, such as fentanyl and opioids. If that were all it did, anyone concerned about the welfare of their families and fellow citizens would line up in support. But just as majestic whales and cute dolphins are killed by fishing nets meant to trap tuna, this bill shuts down the legal pharmacies along with the illegal ones as if they were both cut from the same cloth.
Let’s follow the money (always a prudent approach for understanding why things happen in our world). As one would expect, there are special interest groups that are pursuing whatever channels they can to eliminate the competition. As they see it, why should Americans be able to save 50% to 90% on the prices of their medications from online Canadian pharmacies when they can be forced to pay stratospheric prices for products from online U.S.-based pharmacies?
Ironically, at least one of the powerful special interest groups that supports the DRUGS Act has received money from Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of the opioid painkiller OxyContin.
The Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation (CPPI) website explains its advocacy for the rights of Americans to realize enormous savings by accessing legitimate Canadian pharmacies that follow the rules. Along with some very interesting information on this whole topic, the website also provides a link to easily communicate our concerns regarding this issue to our State Representatives and Senators.
If we don’t communicate with our lawmakers for our own sake because it’s not a particular concern for us personally at this time, remember that someday it could very well be. If not for ourselves, then let’s do it for our parents and grandparents, our aunts and uncles.
There is no reason why one of the richest countries in the world has to make it so hard for its citizens to afford basic, life-enhancing (or lifesaving) prescription medications.

UU.?
Irónicamente, al menos uno de los poderosos grupos de interés especial que apoya la Ley DRUGS ha recibido dinero de Purdue Pharma, el fabricante del analgésico opioide OxyContin.
